I quit my job and will be starting in a new company soon.

It will be a 3 week gap in total.

I won't be getting any sort of salary this month other than being paid for a few days annual leave leftover from the old job.

Can i get job seekers benefit for these few weeks?

I have plenty of prsi contributions.

no, as you didnt get sacked there is a wait period of something like 12 weeks before you can apply.

A close family member was in a role where they were treated like dirt. Mentally they have suffered and were treated appalling when a family member was terminally ill so they just handed in their notice.

When they leave this job they won't be able to claim anything? Or can they try?

If your family member was harassed out of employment then in theory they are eligible.

They will have to speak to the Jobseekers people and explain all this. Be sure to use the word 'harassment'.

Then its up to a bureaucrat to decide. I would hope that would be a 'yes'.

The general rule is that if a person voluntarily leaves work and deprives themselves of income, they can be disqualified from jobseeker payments for up to 9 weeks.

However, the circumstances are examined for each person who leaves a job and signs on, and the disqualification may not always be applied

Best bet for your family member is to apply, explain everything and see what happens

The most simple solution to this is the most ignored.

If your family member was sufficiently stressed that they felt they’d no choice but to hand in their notice then their GP is probably quite agreeable to them being awarded Illness Benefit which is paid at the same rate and in which you are excluded from having to be available for work. Payable for2 years.

Even if you resign from a job for no reason the worst that happens is you get nothing for 9 weeks and then you can get job seekers benefit to start with for 6/9 months depending on prsi contributions

OP, if the DEASP won’t give you a payment you can always try the community welfare.

They might be willing to offer a temporary payment, especially if you offer to pay them back afterwards.

Was in a similar situation last summer and they arranged a payment to keep me going for a few weeks.

Because of the 12 weeks mentioned above, I've only done it 3 times in 15 years, taking a 2-3 week break between new jobs, hardly the biggest criminal the social welfare has ever seen.

i didn’t say you were. But you’re still lying to the DEASP, committing fraud (like it or not) so that you can take a break between jobs.

Instead of defrauding the welfare why don’t you try and save some money to support you during a job gap, like most financially sensible adults do?

Theres a budget allotted to SW every year in order to support people who cannot support themselves .

There isn’t a bottomless bucket of money which falls out of the sky.

The money comes from the PRSI that working people contribute, and from money that the state borrows which has to be paid back, with interest, eventually, by taxpayers.

SW have to decide how to divide up this money. They do their best to only give it to people who need it and are claiming it fairly.

There are people at home too sick to work getting €220 a week.

There are people at home 24/7 looking after a sick child getting not much more.

If people like you didn’t think it was ok to steal €220 every now and again from the pot of money then the Dept would be able to give these people more money. You are literally taking food out of their mouths.

If everyone decided that they could steal a couple of weeks dole every year then how would that work out?

So enjoy the money you stole from the widow with 3 kids or the man looking after his father with Alzheimer’s. I hope it keeps fine for you…

Yes . They wil want bank statements going back 3 months.

You obviously don't need the money from the public purse if you have lots of savings.
