First of all I think it was a bad decision handing in your notice to give you a 3 week break. Second of all, if you walk in and say you have been laid off, finished your contract, whatever, unless its a regular occurrence, you will get your dole. People can do all the grandstanding they want here but other that me thinking the OP didn't think it through, and not realising they should hand in their notice to line up with the new job, it is in the grand scheme of things, not actually a big deal and done by loads of people every year. I'd sooner get a full weeks pay for a few weeks and then only take a few days off as the dole is enough to survive but I want more than that, but each to their own.

Myself and my wife are leaving our jobs in about 6 weeks. We are just taking a year or two off. Totally sick of the tax we are paying working and the 80 or so hours we get back to ourselves will be great after so many years of hard work.

We did discover that there may be issues getting the dole, so we checked and if you go to your GP and tell them you are very stressed out at work and cant handle it anymore then they will certiofy you and you can quit your job and take that cert to the social welfare officer. you could if you wanted even just stay working but go on sick leave for an extended amount of time with that.

The route we decided to talk was to speak to our employers and ask to be let go with no redundancy as we didnt want to call in sick for months and then leave. Employers both agree so that is what is happening that is whats happening.

Then you book your holidays from work for those two weeks, loads of people leaving do this and use up your holiday pay. Last job I left I hadn't taken any holidays, so I gave about 2 months notice but the last 3 weeks I was on holiday.

Anyway, like I said, despite the morally righteous brigade, yes it's wrong but you will get away with it because in the grand scheme of things, it's fairly minor stuff. Comically though, if you are on holiday, you won't be able to pick up so this is all mute.

If you have paid huge amounts of PRSI and tax over the years, in my case enough to keep the guts of 10 people on the dole every month for about 20 years, then going on the dole for a for a while is more like, taking back control :), than fraud as far as I am concerned.

That one person claiming the dole for 2-3 weeks by saying their contract ran out (Which one can still get from the community officer anyway) is the reason why Widows, Carers, etc don't get more from the social. It's the above mentioned hairdressers, lads on nixers while claiming the dole, delivery drivers being paid to the hand etc etc etc that are hampering the SW. The most common reports of SW abuse allege issues such as working while claiming, cohabiting with a partner who is making a financial contribution, or claiming while living abroad.

But people are poor because of some guy who works 50 hours a week paying extra tax and prsi from his overtime to fund such things claims the dole for a couple of weeks 🙄

It's not your money, it's a social insurance policy you have paid into and you don't qualify for compensation at this time. As for a mortgage, if you are starting a new job now, you're about a year away from approval in any case.

A lame attempt to justify your fraud by arguing that it is only a small amount of fraud compared to some others.

Just because you are not the biggest fraudster does not mean you are not a fraudster and you are deluding yourself if you think it does not all add up and have an impact on the SW system.
