Replacing lawn with flag stones and what plant for crevices

So our back lawn is small and in shade a lot of the time, so spends a lot of the time quite wet and this combined with a dog who likes digging and 2 boys means mess constantly coming into the house. What plant would work, to keep it tidyish, able to withstand bikes and footballs and very insect friendly?
