I just got a reminder that my RTE TV licence is due for renewal. I moved into the house a few years back and received a threatening post to pay. I complied even though I can't receive RTE TV and only listen to Newstalk and BBC radio. I would be happy to pay News talk/ BBC/ ITV/ Channel 4 for the great service they provide. Do I have any other option but to pay RTE a licence fee even though I don't use the service?

Yes. I receive BBC/ C4 etc on TV.

Thanks dxhound. There's a bit of reading in that thread! I'm just a bit pissed off having to pay for a service that I don't use (as well as receiving an electric bill that I didn't expect)...

It's not an "RTE" Licence. Its a TV Licence.

You pay a licence fee for having a television in your house, not what channels you watch on it.

An Post collect the fees on behalf of the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications.

Thanks but it seems like another tax for a service not used by me. I already pay environmental and climate tax.

Bin the tv, along with the letter.

Get a vpn and a good monitor/projector, stream itv, c4, netflix etc through that instead.

The TV license was brought in around the 1950s when owning a TV was kind of rare. And was used as an excuse to pay for RTE. Well, to be honest, the whole scheme doent work any more. RTE have more money than they know what to do with. And nobody watches their content anyway.

Only its not though.

Its a TV Licence, or if you prefer, a broadcast receiving licence, and even if RTE shut down tomorrow, there would still be a TV licence fee, like most other countries in the EU.

The first part highlighted in your picture is not about RTE, but about the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).
