How often sign on?

My partner has just been offered a new job, part-time. I’ve heard part time workers don’t have to sign on and get paid through bank transfer. Does anyone know how many hours he’d need to work to trigger this? He currently drives me to work and collects the kids so the sign on times changing often haven’t been convenient…
