Replacing handset with like for like (elderly parent)

My father has a Samsung J3 android handset that's prepay. He's out of contract, the screen is a mess of cracks, battery doesn't hold its charge etc so he's agreed to replace it as long as it's the same handset. I can get a refurbished or new matching handset but just want to check what I need to do to ensure he doesn't lose his contacts, whatsapp chats, facebook accounts - he has no idea if he has a google account, has never downloaded an app (sister sorted whatsapp) and only uses hotmail for email. Any advice or guidance? I don't use Android so have no knowledge of process to move his data.

Set up a goggle account on the old phone. It should sync stuff automatically or at least easily. He may even already have a Google account. You should be able to reset the password if so, if you have access to the phone.

Get the new phone and see if you can sync stuff down onto that.

Note: the OS will have moved on a bit so the experience will be similar and improved.

This will at least / should sync contacts.

Chats for WhatsApp can be backed up to a Google account. Never backed up or restored what's app chats.

Facebook, hotmail are standalone services ... you will have to reset passwords if you don't know what they are.

Keep the old phone for 2FA etc until he's fully moved over. You will have to swap SIM back and forth.

You could simply get a note write down all his account names and passwords write down all his contact names phones just in case something go,s wrong ,simply install WhatsApp , on a pc or any android phone open his Hotmail WhatsApp account and see does his passwords work

Eg some apps auto login to the account when the phone is used

Hold on to old phone for a few weeks to make sure all apps work after putting SIM in the new phone

When you install apps on the new phone they ask for users to login and they may ask for phone no

To install apps on new phone you need to set up a Gmail account usually

write down the password 2fa 2factor authentication is optional

Make password something like JoeDubbno555ie not to complicated write it down somewhere
