If that was the EPL, the Ref would have needed to view it 40 times. Liking the way VAR is used outside the EPL

I'd say just for the pageantry of the thing, for such a big moment, it's safer to have the ref actually be able to say to the complaining Madrid players "i saw it, it was a foul".

I think that this is the best way to use VAR.

Give the referee the second look at the same incident, and act on it in his own opinion.

Not be told what to do by someone else on what they think it should be.
