Three pretty uninspiring performances from Man City in a row now, dropping points to Chelsea of course, but only barely doing enough against Brentford and Bournemouth. Had expected them to absolutely monster this month and rack up their GD, but it's not turned out that way at all... they've a much harder fixture list coming up soon, so would want to start getting their shït together.

That's what champions do though. Win games not playing well.

Absolutely. De Bruyne will have to start the tougher fixtures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,738 ✭✭✭giveitholly

But still getting the points(well obviously besides the Chelsea match). They always seem to just do enough to get the wins. Everyone is on about these tough fixtures they have coming up,but to be honest this evening's game was probably more difficult than the Manchester derby next week.

Still wouldn't bet against them in any league game for the rest of the season

City are in the midst of a run that we’ll look back on as having won it, in the end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,085 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Only 1 goal conceded by City in the last 4 games. Teams not racking up much xg either, most under 1 and a couple around the 0.3 mark. Shutting down teams that way.

Don't be writing Arsenal off yet imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,085 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

That second Arsenal goal is horrific defending by Trippier. He runs a few yards behind his teammates offside line and plays Martinelli onside. Then stops and gives Martinelli a head start in a foot race, leaves him and then doesn't cover the space / see Havertz running through to tap in ahead of him.

He's made an awful lot of mistakes directly leading to goals in the last few months.

Dreadful day for Ten Hag but if he wins another 3 or 4 in a row it’ll keep him in a job for a while, but surely Man U will join the list of Massive Clubs looking for a new manager.

Always feel City are fantastic at managing themselves going through the final games, not expending any unnecessary energy. I don’t doubt they would have found a second goal if one was needed.

Arsenal look brilliant too, and have since the winter break. Can they keep that sort of tempo for the next couple of months, particularly if they stay in the CL though?

Liverpool are running on fumes, capable of huge performances but still have 3 competitions after this week and a stack of injuries.

It’s cities to lose right now - will see how they get through their tough patch but think they’ll do enough.

  • Posts: 0 Van Tall Cemetery

Arsenal at 4/1 for the league has to be the value surely

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭doc_17

Newcastle could also be looking for a new manager in the summer. Jose??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭hawaii501

City's to lose imo. Bench options are now too good, Liverpool are going on adrenaline which sadly won't be enough. They need some key players back quick.

It looks like Arsenal have been rejuvenated since their extra break excluding Porto game, didnt think they'd be back in contention but they are serious contenders now.

Hopefully city don't win 10 games in a row like usual to keep it somewhat interesting.

has been linked i think and certainly fits the profile newcastle will be going after.

    4-0 game over

Not an Arsenal fan but definitely the most entertaining team to watch...they are on some run

I think they are 4/1 because they have to go to City, Brighton, United and Spurs. They also have Chelsea and Villa at home which won't be easy.

If they beat city then you'll see their odds come way in.

Because City are boring, and Utd are interesting.

What's that for Arse now, 14 or 15 goals in 3 games? Regardless of the opposition, that's superb. Even though Arteta acts like a gowl on the sideline by times they are lovely to watch and have some likeable players. Be great to see them clinch it ahead of City and LFC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,175 ✭✭✭Xander10

Not for me. If they get a sight of the winning line they will inplode per usual

Suprised there's not much talk of the Newcastle downfall after all the hype

Their inadequacies are being rather glossed over due to Chelsea being as mad as a box of frogs and United's two steps forward, five steps backwards approaches. Basically they don't garner enough clicks for the media to focus on them as much as the other bigger clubs in 'crisis'.

Howe will be gone at the end of the season and a big name but likely past their best manager will be signed to lead them into a glorious new era of sportswashing.

Jose Mourinho, that means you by the way😜

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,283 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

Mourinho to Newcastle seems so obvious now that you mention it and with his recent talk of wanting to come back to the Premier league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,654 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Howe to Everton in the summer would be good for all parties. I think he’d do well there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,348 ✭✭✭NITRO95

Howe will get the England job and someone will take a punt on Southgate. I really hope that someone isn't Utd but unfortunately I can't rule it out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,991 ✭✭✭Pauliedragon

What's Moyes up to announcing there's a contract there but he'll decide in the Summer. Is it a big **** you to the fans saying it's my decision and ye will have to wait for me to decide? It seems very antagonistic or maybe I'm overthinking it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,295 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Newcastle have been victims of their own success. They didn't have a squad big enough to cope with the addition of Champions League football and injuries. Not the first team to experience it either. Also victims of FFP, not as easy to spend the money behind you if you try to follow the rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭doc_17

Yeah, Newcastle just have to ask City about the best way to go about organising the Aramco St James Park. Then we can use John Henry’s line “what was the second highest bid”!

Just watching MOTD here and Harry Maguire should have put Traoré into the 10th row of the stand for that winning goal. Take the yellow!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Indeed, part of their issue will just be waiting for past sponsorship deals to lapse. In the summer they switched from a 6.5m per year sponsor to a Saudi owned 25m per year sponsor. Once they’ve a rake of their own companies sponsoring them they’ll have a lot more freedom with FFP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,085 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

He was already booked so maybe didn't want to risk being sent off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,634 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Not the usual way we see the term "victim" in relation to matters relating to the house of Saud in all fairness, but there you go.

While those figures can be used to highlight a potential dodgy deal, you do need to consider where Newcastle were as a club when they signed that 6.5m per year deal. When they signed the 25m per year sponsor they were a Champions League club. So it'd probably be beneficial to also compare it with other clubs in the Premier League that have finished around 3rd/4th place in the couple of seasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

This becomes a more legitimate conversation if they weren’t sponsored by themselves.

(Saudi PIF own both Newcastle and ‘Sela’)

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

They were able to go on a splurge at the beginning of the regime change precisely because of ffp though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,258 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

true, which is why eriksen should have taken the yellow but he didnt for whatever baffling reason

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,528 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Get the feeling Sheffield United would just like the season to be over and start preparing for the championship

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,634 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

They're 9th, and long gone from the Champions League. One swallow does not a summer make etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,881 ✭✭✭✭klose

Everton’s points reduction reduced from 10 points to 6, bad news for Luton, still the other potential deduction as well as Nottinghams one could see them stay up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,085 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Everton's 10 point deduction reduced to 6 points. Moves them up to 15th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,289 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Good it was sorted quick, originally they were saying may for a decision which would have been ridiculous not knowing who was actually relegated.

does that set a precedent that they'll get another 6 for the other breach (Forest too)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,378 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I think it's actually the wrong move to reduce the punishment. They should have let the 10 points stand and then that's the basis for all other teams going forward. You overspend by the same amount you get 10 points deduction then a sliding scale up and down depending on how much you do overspend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,609 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

    Absolutely

It sets the precedent going forward. PL found them guilty. 10 points was/is fair. It has to be enough to make clubs think. 10 points is 4 wins to overturn (3 wins and a draw to break even) which is massive to clubs from 10th down. It drags them into very uncomfortable territory.

For clubs chasing top 4 it's very likely to be the difference between making it and missing it for a lot of them. Same for title challengers. Very difficult to shake off 10 points.

6 points only 2 wins to break even - definitely less of a deterrent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,971 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The standard is now six and you can still use that as a sliding scale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,378 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Six isn't much of a starting point though. Ten was fair.

I don't think 5 points per 10m over the spending limit is unfair. Now you're down to 3 points which is only one win which doesn't seem much of a deterrent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,873 ✭✭✭djan

Putting the conspiracy hat on, have to reduce the deductions in points so that if City ever get caught they don't end up in Sunday league 😉

City are accused of something else entirely. If City are found guilty and continuing to play Premier League football, then heads should roll. It’s why I’m fairly confident they’ll find a way to get off completely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,971 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

There has to be mitigation for circumstances that affected what happened. The withdrawal from large Russian sponsors affected things a lot.

The Premier league have to get involved before things get out of hand. Maybe they do but I've never heard about it. The Premier league should be giving the club a warning if things look like they are getting out of hand. If a club then makes efforts to control things you have mitigation. If they continue on without any attempts to prevent things going crazy then you have your reason to up the punishment.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

6x115=690 points deducted from City. Can that be spread out over the next 10 years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭eigrod

The guy on Sky said the appeals cttee said 6 points is in line with similar punishments in EFL and that clubs who have gone into administration were deducted 9 so that’s why they thought 10 too much.

Looks like 6 is going to be the standard now for €20m odd over the permitted overspend limit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 259 ✭✭Will_I_Amnt

Getting a bigger reduction for an overspend than you would get for Administration is and always was ludicrous!
