Can’t read it as behind paywall but I think it mentions he says Ryan should go abroad - I think that’s the main sentiment of this thread too - there’s no real “home” for RT’s “talents”on this island.

Someone mentioned above RT taking over from PK? I think highly unlikely as Ryan just doesn’t have the experience of doing current affairs - he’s just not credible.

Egan finest moment was posing with the z list celebrities and who the feck are you on the front cover of a sindo mag.

Did he not mention that NKM was only involved in his move to Newstalk, I though this was a strange statement at the time.

As far as I know, he's been his agent for longer than that, but I admit I could be wrong. Either way, he's a vested party to this and has a massive conflict of interest in this story and as one of our most esteemed broadcasters he should know better than to be weighing in like he has on this. I guess it's ego really, and the reality that "they" will have to fight to keep the status quo.

Yes. Gerry Ryan had a show around 1991 called Secrets on prime Saturday evening RTE 1. It mostly involved smashing plates, putting people in the 'gunge box' and lots of shouting. Pure rubbish.

Then in the mid 90s it was succeeded by Brendan O'Carroll's toilet humour programme Hot Milk n Pepper. A more adult version of Pat Ingloldsby's Pat's Chat.

This theme of the lowest form of entertainment was continued into the 2010s with the Ray D'Arcy Show. It was full of silly little games for prizes. Usually kicking or throwing things. Again 'entertainment' at the prime Saturday post the 9pm news.

I agree re. Kenny. He's too invested in the Tubridy saga not to be bringing his own feelings into it. In my opinion all the LLS hosts had ego issues, along with other presenters. Gay Byrne was full of self importance, thought he couldn't be done without. He considered himself a Mount Rushmore figure in RTE. Kenny really fancies himself and has a nasty streak. Tubridy, enough said.

The more likeable RTE presenters were/are Derek Davis, a nice man. Brendan O'Connor has a genuine side I feel. Daithi O'Se would be ok too. John Creedon, Bibi was a nice lady. John Bowman, a pro, quiet life outside his work etc.

It seems NK is PK agent and friend, part of the interview with Neimh Horan below....

    "NH: What about Noel Kelly?

PK: He’s a friend as well as agent.

NH: How often do you talk?

PK: When there is business to be done. I would have the odd lunch with him to bring me up to speed.

NH: A lot of people have spoken about his negotiating style. What’s it like?

PK: I don’t see him in action, but I suspect he is tough. Because he doesn’t have to be liked. And he will say that — he’ll be as tough as he has to be.

In my time in RTÉ, you’d go in and try to make a case for yourself and you’d be put down. They would tell me “you’re always replaceable”. That attitude prevailed among some management. So that’s why we need an agent. And also, you don’t have to blow your own trumpet. It sounds immodest and bumptious if you go in saying: “I’m terrific.” You can’t do it.

So when people ask, “Why do you have an agent?” — that’s why.

There was a famous senior executive in RTÉ who remarked about Gerry Ryan, when Gerry was looking for a better contract, that he could go over to UCD, across the road in Belfield, to the L&H Society and pick up “half-a-dozen Gerry Ryans”.

Then Gerry Ryan died tragically — and they can’t replace Gerry Ryan.

    ______

PK: He has somehow got to resolve everything with RTÉ — whether that is in the High Court or behind closed doors in Montrose. I don’t think he can truly move on until that is resolved.

NH: Is there a possibility he will sue?

PK: You need big money to sue. And it’s a risky business because, initially, the barristers will tell you you’ve got a 99pc chance of winning. Then as the case looms closer, it becomes 70pc, then 50pc and then “it depends on the judge”.

NH: Who would have more to lose in court, RTÉ or Ryan?

PK: RTÉ would die rather than go to court. Because we have probably only seen the tip of the iceberg. There are other issues. All the contracted people that should have been on staff. There are the severance packages for highly paid executives. You bring all that out in the wash in the High Court, and whatever about lost licence fee revenue now, you can multiply that.

NH: Would you go in the box for him [Tubridy]?

PK: If I was asked by any party, I would go into the box and tell the truth. Whatever I was asked by either side, I would tell it as I saw it."

Is this article on 'Gloss' (never heard of it) the same as the Sindo paywalled one?

What PK highlighted in that interview is that either way big salaries funded by the tv license are unsustainable.

It was an rte theme during the Bertie bubble that public sector wages should match private sector, PK seems unaware he was part of that "me-too" culture

    Totally unlikely imo.

Whether people like him (PK) or not, there is no comparison in my opinion, between the two of them, when it comes to intellect and grasp of current affairs.

@ButtersSuki Can you tell me why RTE only had to publish talent payments/wages 2 years after the fact? Why aren't they forced to publish current fees/wages/payment as they happen? Or at least at year end.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

No idea tbh but assume they’re compelled to do as they revived public monies be that licence fee or govt. funding.

There appears to be no rigid timeline either for the release of these, often appearing more than 2 years after the year in question closed.

One interesting thing that came out in the wash during all of this was that NK was to be informed in advance of the publication of those figures. If you’re a radio regular you’ll notice almost all of the NK “talent” took that week off. Just a coincidence of course….

Further back around from about 1988 to 1991 and replace by Ryantown (there may have been a middle series between Secrets and Ryantown). Secrets wasn't too bad it was pretty much a family show based on similar UK shows of the time like Noel Edmund's House Party, not exactly anything to write home about, but on the other hand Ryantown was pure piss.

It is pretty much replaced by The Big Big Movie by the mid to late 1990s. RTÉ feeling that the Beeb had that market and why should we even bother. Salt n' Pepper was Sunday night at 8 before Glenroe for a series or 2.

They never really returned to the family show, after than, with the exception of a summer show hosted by Simon Young and Daragh O'Brien's It's A Family Affair.

We could start a "Tubs is great/Tubs is doing Xxx" article watch for the Indo.

Highlight the days when he ISNT actually mentioned in the paper.

Didn't Gerry Ryan do a revamp of 'School Around the Corner'? Or am I confusing him with someone else?

Either way, it was a bit of a non-event.

Edit: Now that I think of it, there's an ideal project for Tubridy! What with his affinity with the childers of Ireland and all that. Although it would probably have to be on Virgin Media or other RTE alternative.

PK's interview is filled with inconsistencies.

First of all he throws to the wind to the idea that these presenters are hard working

"You could go in on a Tuesday night to present PT and it might be a report on the banking system. Your job would be to go in, get suited and booted and say: "Blah blah blah.. - the banking system. Here's a report from X." Then you say "That report was from X, good night".

then says he might interview a minster and get up at the crack of dawn for the radio show.

He doesn't mention that the Frontline was a audience failure.

He goes on to say that he had little dealings with Kevin Bakhurst

But From September 2012 to October 2016, Bakhurst was the managing director of news and current affairs (also Deputy DG for a period and then acting DG).

Bakhurst would have made the decision to move PK to Prime Time in 2013 and he would have been heavily involved in PK's contract negotiations in 2013.

    But according to Pat

I met KB only a couple of times and we had a pleasant lunch. I think. But he wasn't central to anything that I did. I concluded that he was the kind of guy who could be DG of the BBC, but that something had gotten in the way.

According to RTÉ at the time it was to do with contract negotiations, but as they only happen every five years, that doesn't ring true, but Backhurst will publish them in line with the annual report each year from now on.

The line about being the DG of the BBC is illuminating, it implies "but not of RTÉ". There’s an awful lot to read into that statement. Intriguing.

I think I might have mention the period of time that he was Control of BBC News and Deputy Head of the BBC News room, Dec 2005 until Sept 2012.

Wonder what happened in during that period of time, but he did save RTÉ following the fall out of the Mission to Pray documentary!

He did indeed do school around the corner- and I’d say if Ryan had continued in RTÉ that’s exactly the TV show he would have ended up doing - you’re spot on.

And the fallout from a particular Frontline show in 2011 that resulted in a number of enquiries and a settlement to prevent a court case.

One interesting thing in the PK interview is that he says the RTE executives also get bonuses which hasn’t been mentioned to date. He also says that RTE would do anything to stop all this ending up in court because what has come out to date is only the tip of the iceberg and they would be truly finished if the rest of it came out. He said something similar on the radio a while ago…” the stories I could tell about RTE”.

A lot more that people are keeping quiet about. No Irish paper will delve, we need the Sunday Times or the Daily Mail to do a number, the way the ST did with the FAI.

Just on the daily puff pieces blowing smoke up the toymans hole, stop clicking on them and stop sharing them if you want them to go away. It's not necessarily a pro RT agenda that's getting them published, it's clicks and advertising.

Another person using the term I coined (Ryan Subsidy) without acknowledgement or payment I see. Sigh.

    i need a better agent.

I wonder would NKM take me on for all the times I’ve mentioned NK himself and his stable of talent over the years?
