Revenue letter - possible identity theft

Was self employed for years and been unemployed a good few years no dealings with revenue

Received a letter stating they were changing the bank into which paye refunds are paid as requested by me

The aib iban isn't one I used but I recognize the old business registration number top of page

Unable to contact them on the 01 number or login

Just concerned this may be identity theft in the meantime

    Thanks

Find a phone number yourself, independent of the letter, and ring them to ask about it.

Did you by any chance click any Facebook adds for tax back companies? That's pretty much the first thing they do when you fill in any details online.

Doubt it check Facebook once a month wouldn't be clicking on ads and almost all ads are blocked on fone

But the account name is Irish tax rebates

Are they scammers or how could this happen without more details

I had long forgotten the reg no on letter but recognized it

Surely even clicking an ad which I doubt couldn't trigger this

Some sort of clerical error if the company is legit ?

No way anybody got any details from me

I avoid revenue like the plague usually

You have somehow managed to appoint them as your agent.

Sounds like you signed up to a tax agency service. Irish Tax Rebates are a legitimate tax refund agency. They have plenty of adds on Facebook, twitter etc.

Still no harm to double-check with Revenue when they became your agent and what they may have done. You can also remove them as your agent.

    100% I didn't like I said I run a mile from anything revenue

No way I supplied even 1detail to anybodyand highly unlikely I clicked

Only recognized the reg no when letter jogged my memory

Anyway it's no biggie right now til I take up employment

Years since I used paye if ever ? Would paye be relevant to self employed

It is quite relevant as someone has access to your revenue record & is free to make any changes on your behalf, I'd not be ignoring that if I were you.

No I know that's my concern identity theft and financial loss when I take up employment

Only thing I can think of is last set of accounts ~ 15 yrs ago I paid someone on boards to do it

Prior to that it was all chartered accountant

At the risk of repeating myself I didn't appoint them

If someone else did well I'll have to straighten it out

Problem of course is that revenue will Probably ask me would I like to remove them as agent and nothing much more

Been years since I logged in to ros so I guess if have to sort out a password change

No idea what other info is out there

So that sounds like a scam by where you ring the number on the letter & provide your bank details fully to them & they then scam that. They could be using legitimate details to make it look ok.

Best bet is to ring Revenue from a number on their website (not the letter) & ask them about the change of bank details & confirm if it is actually a request from Revenue. If it's not, tell them all the details of the letter as they'll be interested in that. If it's not, you can correct Revenue that you never requested this change and have no dealings with Irish Tax Rebates.

Got it cleared up it was an error no identity theft

Fair play to you for spotting the potential and acting to clear it up: lots of people wouldn't have realised, or would have ignored it.

Getting a revenue letter that seems off is worrying, especially if you're not expecting it. First, I’d suggest carefully checking the letter for any red flags like strange details, wrong addresses, or any unfamiliar names. If something feels off, it could be worth contacting the agency directly to confirm if it's legit. Sometimes, these things happen by mistake, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you're still concerned about identity theft, you might want to run your details through an identity monitoring service like www.idanalyzer.com to catch anything unusual early. They can help you spot any suspicious activity on your records.
