Yeah, but the BBC didn't provide either misinformation or conspiracy theories here; they just provided incomplete information.

Which makes we wonder why you mention conspiracy theories here, unless to defend Farage's position by saying that he's a conspiracy theorist, we should have low expectations of him, and looking like a fool isn't a problem when he has never really pretended to be anything else?

thats how the narratives would go, but seems like the opposite, not followed the saga but if something is "incomplete" how does that get you to reporting the opposite position? am I summing this right that Farrage says he was being debanked because of who he was and the opposite being reported was that it was purely commercial/not meeting requirements?

And, as already pointed out, we now know that both of these accounts are wrong, because incomplete. Simply not meeting the bank's economic criteria would (probably) not in itself have led to Farage being rejected as a customer. Simply having unsavoury political beliefs and an unfortunate public profile would not, in itself, have led to Farage being rejected as a customer. It required the combination of the two things. He had to be uncommercial and a PR liability in order to get dumped.

And in fact Farage said rather more initially than just that he was being rejected because of his political beliefs; he said that he was being rejected as part of an establishment conspiracy to drive him out of the UK. Its very clear now, from the evidence the Farage himself has elicited, that that wasn't simply an incomplete statement of the reasons; it was flat-out wrong. It was, in fact, a conspiracy theory, and I assumed (wrongly?) that that was why you brought up conspiracy theories in this context.

Inaccurate and incomplete information was provided in that BBC report. You repeatedly leave out the inaccurate part.

Astonishing to see that even when the BBC hold their hands up and admit they were in the wrong, the BBC continues to get defended as if their reporting was true all along.

I was lambasted at the time for being "foolish" enough to question the obvious flaws in their unsubstantiated reporting at the time, yet it turns out that my assessment of the situation was right all along.

Hard to see the CEO of Coutts or even Nat West surviving the next few weeks.

    It was not "inaccurate".

He DOESN'T have enough money to qualify for a Coutts AND he is a reputational risk to the bank.

You have repeatedly claimed that the Coutts document was "full of lies" and yet refuse to provide a single example of said lies and now you are here touting the same line of nonsense.

So no , as always, you were not "right all along" - You've never been vindicated in any of your little crusades here , ever.

So now you're disagreeing with the BBC, because their apology specifically stated their reporting was inaccurate, and this was repeated by the journalist who released the story to the public.

"However, the information turned out to be incomplete and inaccurate. Therefore, I would like to apologise to Mr Farage," Mr Jack continued.

The BBC reported that he didn’t have enough money for Coutts account.

Farage says, “no it’s because of my political beliefs”

Farage releases report which states that he doesn’t have enough money for a Coutts account AND it’s due to his odious beliefs bringing the firm into disrepute.

Farage still doesn’t have a Coutts account.

Sounds like an own goal to anyone but Farage’s most blinkered fans.

The BBC News editor and the CEO of Nat West wouldn't have the information to hand on the story that many of the posters on this thread would have.

its not really about Farage and what he said, you have a bbc that sets itself up as the truthy organisation falling for one of its narratives thereby lowering the standard of how they treat stories and a bank closing accounts because of what individuals believe. If you showed me a list of the 1000 "worst" people in the UK who havnt committed actual crimes, all democratically minded people should fight tooth and nail and push back against the banks and others. Lets face it the risk managers at Coutts werent doing their job very well, a junior could have told them this would kick up a stink which Im sure they regret

The BBC are saying what is needed to make Farage go away - It's a PR exercise , nothing more. Just like the "apology" from Coutts.

The FACTS of the case based on the Coutts document that Farage himself released, are that Farage no longer does enough business with Coutts to qualify for an account with them AND they view him as a reputational risk due to his public behaviours.

It was the combination of both those factors that led to the closure of Farages account - If he did a bit more business with them or was a little less of a Hateful Twat in public he might have retained his account but neither of those things were going to be possible so they closed his account.

Farage is the only one to have lied in all this so far, where he claimed that this was all a big conspiracy to push him out of the country because of Brexit.

This is about how much meaning the "apologies" from Coutts and the BBC have for Farage

You're treating "incomplete" and "inaccurate" as two different things. Not necessarily.

A report which stated simply that Farage fell below the financial criteria and this is why he was dumped would be incomplete, because that's not the sole or full reason why he was dumped. And, because it's incomplete, it would also be inaccurate.

But suppose the report stated (a) that Farage fell below the financial criteria and was dumped for that reason, and (b) that his political position and public reputation had nothing to do with being dumping. That report would be inaccurate for more reasons than being incomplete; it would be inaccurate because it contained a direct falsehood.

We can no longer see the original BBC report, because they have updated it and attached an explanatory note. But it seems that the original report did include a statement to the effect that Coutts' decision on Farage's account did not involve considerations about his political views; we now know that was wrong.

Reading between the lines, the BBC were presumably told by Coutts or by someone in Coutts that the decision did not involve consideration of his political views; how else would they get that story? This is somewhat embarrassing for the BBC, but being misled by sources is an occupational hazard that journalists have to negotiate somehow, and they all get it wrong from time to time. Farage has been fairly magnanimous in accepting the BBC apology. It's massively embarrassing for Coutts, who aren't supposed to talk about their customers' affairs at all, and certainly aren't supposed to lie about them. Bankers are supposed to be not only discreet but also honest and, on this point, it seems Coutts was neither.

It's this briefing to the BBC, more than the decision to dump Farage, that is behind the talk of heads rolling at Coutts or at NatWest.

It's notable that in the flurry of apologies, one thing hasn't happened; Farage hasn't got his Coutts account back. And a careful reading of Coutts apology will show that they haven't apologised for dumping him.

Nor will they. Coutts is an exclusive private bank, and the word "exclusive" means what it says; Coutts excludes people. Their whole business model revolves around picking and choosing their customers. They will never accept that they can't do that; they'd rather shut up shop.

    Brilliant summery.

To my mind it boils down to these simple facts

    • No rules or laws were broken by Coutts
    • Farage signed up to a legally binding contractual arrangement which would have outlined both their minimum deposit limits and that they retained the right to withdraw service at their discretion or if the customer failed to meet their minimum requirements (a fairly standard contractual clause)
    • Everything else is a consequence of Farage having a tantrum when these rights and obligations were enforced

However you look at it Farage comes out looking very bad in all this. The BBC look unfortunate and Coutts look exclusive.

I said this back on page 3 expecting the details to leak.

As expected, the farage supporters are more concerned that the leak occurred then the fact that Mr. PayPal is going to be dumped for not doing enough business with Coutts.

(though maybe he has raised his profile enough so his supporters have put him back above the threshold :)

The attempts at claiming that Farage has brought attention to a "huge problem" impacting the common man is utterly laughable as well.

All he's done is expose himself as being a wanna-be Elite that has been cast aside by his gentlemans club Bank for being an uncouth oik lacking enough money to make the rich-boys tolerate him.

Nat west CEO admits she was the source for leaking private confidential details of Farage's bank account. Funny as **** honestly

So the Nat West CEO has admitted leaking his file to the BBC.

Seanie Fitzpatrick style banking but will she have the sheer neck to not resign.

Did the CEO of Coutts source the documents for her?

Wow, did not expect that, you could see a leak from someone down the chain, or someone who directly managed his account etc. but I'm honestly gobsmacked the CEO of a bank was the one to do so. I can only imagine other clients closing out with them, the board sounds like it's in full damage control mode.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,577 ✭✭✭brickster69

Boards lads having a meltdown, can you imagine they were wanting to put the poor bloke against a wall and face a firing squad for being on the Kremlin's payroll.

Now the woke establishment broke every law going to discredit him. Would of been far better to pop 10 mil in his account and give him a VIP account instead.

.... but did he have a right to the account. NO.

Farage's status remains unchanged by any of this.

Really all the rest is grubby little window dressing.

You actually miss the point ... Farage hasn't won anything.

After that I am wondering whether the CEO has some sort of death-wish.

    Another non-story expressed via dumping.

Now everything comes out and you are shocked. Even Stevie Wonder could see this was a stitch up, but you judged him because you don't like his views. You should be ashamed of yourself as many others should also.

The risk department of a world renowned bank has just publicly destroyed itself. As they say , go woke go broke !

It is pretty serious when you have the CEO of a bank leaking stuff to the media. And stuff that isn't entirely accurate to boot.

When was Coutts, a bank very few people knew existed, world renowned?
