Day van - Van - what's the difference when it comes to ownership.

What's the story with a day van?

    From the revenue website

'Vehicles are 'day vans' and do not qualify as motor caravans if the modifications do not sufficiently alter the interior of the rear compartment.

Likewise, vehicles are 'day vans' if they only modify the boot storage area to provide exterior access to cooking facilities. Revenue will not accept a candidate in which the living facilities are reasonably accessible only from outside the vehicle.'

But there is no 'day van' category mentioned anywhere else?

So is it still a commercial van requiring commercial tax and proof of use for business and commercial insurance?

Or can you buy a van for private use as a day van if you put a bed in the back, and if so, how is it taxed is it taxed as a van for private use under the old cc rate (does this require reclassification, if so, what does that involve) and would you get private motor insurance for it from mainstream private motor insurance companies?

"So is it still a commercial van requiring commercial tax and proof of use for business and commercial insurance?"

There is effectively no such thing as a day van in Ireland, the tax will not allow you to tax it without a legitimate business and no insurance company will offer you insurance unless you are operating it as a business vehicle (and will fail to pay out on any claim if they find out subsequently that you are not using it as stated). There are certain limited range of businesses which would allow you to operate a day van - such as a surveyor or anyone who needs to operate away from home to carry out their business duties.

Some people will claim that you can register your van as a private vehicle and then use it as a day van - but good luck in finding anyone who will offer you insurance in this situation even if you could afford the astronomical tax you would have to pay.

Thats pretty much how I understood it too. Just curious if I was missing something when I see a reference to 'day vans' on the revenue website.
