Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Free at the edge of the box, this could be it.

So close from that corner, 5 mins left.

What a chance at the death!

    Great play Larkin.

We were solid throughout and were capable of putting serious pressure on them. A real pity that piece of defending that lead to the pen happened as we looked like keeping them out.

Couple of super chances at the very end.

Absolutely nothing to be ashamed about, that was a great display from the girls.

She just couldn't get it out of her feet. I thought we played really well but no consolation really.

Shame to lose it conceding that stupid penalty, Ireland well structured though and hard to break down. Bodes well for the rest of the tournament for Ireland. If McCabe scored that last chance draw would have been the fair result IMO. The Aussies did not have many clear cut chances.

Ireland very wasteful on set pieces though not aggressive enough attacking the ball, hopefully that will improve.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,369 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Yeah someone who could keep the ball up front was sorely needed. Thought maybe pushing O'Sullivan onto the last defender would have been a good play.

Was a good performance overall but very disappointing to come away with nothing. Similar to the men v France.

Good man George - "Australia 0 Republic of Ireland 1"

Defensively really good except for one error which cost us. Just lacking a bit upfront which I don't think is helped by the formation we use. McCabes corners were very threatening but no one tried to attack the ball enough. She does need to be a bit more composed out of possession next match tho, she pressed too much at times which left space in behind and was fairly fortunate not too get booked.

Battered them the last 20 mins

    Bitterly disappointed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,348 ✭✭✭NITRO95

Really good performance. Katie McCabe was brilliant over the 90 mins, you can see she's a class above the rest. Thought Carusa was poor and definitely shouldn't be starting the next game. Larkin was a breath of fresh air when she came on. No reason we can't go and give Canada a game and then hopefully beat Nigeria

need a bit more going forward.

19 crosses and 7 corners without a shot on target from them is a poor enough return, and the cross and corners were, in the main, very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,662 ✭✭✭Luckycharms_74

Tony O Donoghue talking rubbish on the pen. " it looked like a tangle of legs as opposed to a push". It was a clumsy challenge and a stupid push in the back

Let's live and learn and hopefully push on vs Canada and Nigeria

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,719 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

agree, missing a bit of quality in midfield and a striker

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,369 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Teams thay put in a load of crosses are generally the weaker ones because they are hopeful rather than aimed a lot of the time.

I think it averages out at a goal every 30 corners or so. Not a reliable way to score but it's one of those things that the eye thinks is a better chance than it is. Much more likely to score keeping the ball in on the byline than letting it run out for example.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,863 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

yeah fair point, but if ireland are going to continue down the route of high crosses / corners stats, then they need to gamble more on both attacking the ball and getting more bodies around the breaking ball.

To focus more on playing through / around a defense then we need either sharper faster front playes who we can slip in behind or a target front player to hold up the ball. Carusa was decent in that role against france but the french lacked the bite and intensity of a competitive game. Unfortunately Carusa didnt have the most effective game today and was crowded out pretty easily enough by the aussies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,912 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Was there any query why Carusa was left on, and Amber Barrett was left on the bench?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

Carusa was subbed off for the last 10 (incl. injury time) but Atkinson came on. I would have gone with Barrett, who knows where the goal is.

On the corners - the only ones we competed for ended up in free kicks to the keeper. McCabe's best chance is to score directly from one.

I thought the corners were terrible - not in the technical execution by McCabe, but in that they kept doing the same one over and over and it wasn't working. They looked like the plan was "just put it in on top of the keeper and see what happens". Why not try some variation?

Thought the decision not to bring on Barrett was really poor. Why, when desperately chasing the game, do you decide to have no natural striker there for a ball bouncing around in the box?

They got a lot right in terms of setup and keeping in the game, but the last 20 mins was a missed opportunity given the amount of possession and territory they had.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,600 ✭✭✭✭siblers

Vera Pauw tactically seems very hit or miss. They're quite frustrating to watch, they do really well to win the ball back but seemed clueless in trying to counter. Also, Sheva is really poor but she keeps startung her, should have been subbed off far earlier in the game

Nigeria held Canada to a draw this morning! Canada missed a penalty

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,876 ✭✭✭budgemook

    Australia 9 points

    Ireland 4 points

    Canada 2 points

    Nigeria 2 points

    🤞

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Ireland getting 5 points is quite an unlikely one, barring rule changes 😅

that draw this morning is huge though, don’t get beat by Canada and it’s all there for us on the last day of the groups.

If Australia win all their games and we win a game to get to 4 points then Canada and Nigeria can't both get to 2 points I think. Only one of them. The Aussies and us would both have beaten one of the 2 other teams :) But the point generally stands, we are clearly going to get to 4 points and qualify now.

I think those calculations include bonus points for tries scored.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,760 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

That result this morning gives us great hope.

It's possible we end up with:

    Aus - 9pts

    Ire/Nig/Canada - 2pts

Given the lack of goal threat of the teams, it would not surprise me if this came to pass.

  • Registered Users Posts: 449 ✭✭jonnreeks

I suppose a draw against Canada would be a reasonable achievement from the Girls in Green and then try to beat Nigeria in the third game!

Main thing is, we are still in it and have a real chance!

Considering we are debutantes, getting out of the group and into the last 16 is a worthy option!

Now that we are in the next round (!) time to see potential opponents

Group B are matched with Group D in the last 16, so IRE vs ENG would be the scenario. Littlejohn is #8, so up to her to be the new Ray!!

When do we get the grudge match with Colombia? Hopefully the final.

Not the biggest fan of the women’s game, but that was quite classy.

I cant understand how Sheva and Carusa are starting for that team!?!

They were both terrible against France in Dublin, and were both very poor against the Aussies ..

Amber Barrett warming up again, and again not brought on !?!? Whats that about.

Abbie Larkin needs to start , or at least come on for the second half, her trickery and pace will cause trouble.

Plenty of Irish support again today, like a home game.

    COYGIG .....

    Need a result.

Will the canadians target McCabe after all the pre match chat about her 'physicality' ?

There ya go. Got our rewards there. With those type of corners, and how good our delivery has been so far, there is always the chance of a howler as well.

    Pissing rain probably suits us.

Scoring direct from a corner is a thing, if you have the ability and the keeper is short or tends to come off their line for corners, it's something to target. Douglas Luiz has scored 3 times for Villa direct from corners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Absolutely perfect delivery too, bending right into the top corner. Unreal execution.

Surprised she didn't take the second corner a minute ago though!

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,797 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

We are playing with real intensity and pressing, I wonder can they keep this up for 90 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,509 ✭✭✭tinpib

The great Johan Brannefalk of Sligo Rovers (almost) scored from 1 a week or 2 ago. Defender right on the line could only head it more into the goal.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,797 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Jordan Flores nearly scored one earlier this season as well. I think it's become a real tactic the last couple of year if you have someone who can whip an inswinger.
