Is crowdfunding for litigation allowed in Ireland?

I'm a lay person so maybe I'm not understanding stuff correctly but I've read that litigation funding has been prohibited in Ireland under the torts of 'maintenance' and 'champerty'. I've read that third-party funding is only allowed if the person has a legitimate interest in proceedings such as insurers or shareholders.

Is this correct or is there a way to raise funds through crowdfunding for a legal case?

I know an autism campaigner in Cork/Waterford was crowd funding for her legal fees a while back. Think it's the only time I've seen that here.

That is my understanding. You generally need to have a personal interest in a case to take part in it, although amicus curiae may have a more general interest.

There may be changes in how certain court cases will be dealt with, stemming from current EU developments, allowing more people or groups of people to make environmental cases.

The courts ruled on this a while back in the ESAT/Lowry case.

You might be able to crowd fund costs for a case if those funding the case did not get a share of any award.
