Burnt school tie mystery

Has anyone got any idea how a school tie might have got burnt like this.
Our senior infant son says 'it might have been put on the oven (hob)', but he's not the most reliable witness at that age.
Safety being paramount, I'd be interested to know if anyone had any alternative theories.
