Light walnut stain for oak stairs

Hi all, I have a light oak stairs and would like to paint it cream and walnut. Id like the walnut not to be too dark. Some of them seem to look more like black than dark brown. Id also like a hard wearing product for the stairs. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
