Logically, it's probably 'Thermometer' that is pronounced incorrectly since it is a meter (pronounced 'meeter') used for measuring. 🧐

RTE sports people reporting that 'In soccer, Ireland plays …insert team name… tonight', without being specific if it is the men or women's team. They seem to deliberately avoid mentioning the gender - what is the issue in just saying the Ireland men's or women's team is playing tonight?

I have had to do a double think at times to figure out which team they are talking about.

I’ve noticed that recently ….. Listings online and on satellite box ‘Ireland vs Denmark’… just inform people which ireland team !

Men’s senior team , ladies seniors, men’s U21, ladies U21…… like is it sexist to differentiate ? Maybe it could be that some people may have no interest in one of the teams, it happens 🤷🏻 ….and might want to exercise their democratic right to decide what watch you know, what they want / like to watch !?

Yes, logic and consistency.

In the metric system you add a prefix (nano, micro, milli, centi, giga, kilo, tera etc) to the unit of measurement.

The prefix is stressed while the unit of measurement is pronounced as usual: kilowatt, nanometre, megahertz....

Yet for some reason the rule is often broken for 'kilometre'. People will pronounce nanometre, micrometre, millimetre, centimetre correctly but consistency goes out the window for kilometre.

It must be adopted from other words ending in Meter, like Thermometer and Odometer. If there is a rule, which I suspect there isn't, enough people have broken it to make it a recognised pronunciation in dictionaries. Nobody is wrong and everybody is right. Live and let live. Whatever the rule for Scone is supposed to be, it suffered the same fate.

Thermometre and Odometre measure something (temp and velocity, IIRC), they don't indicate a quantity, unlike kilometre, centimetre, etc.

Maybe that's where the difference is. Anyway, IIRC again, compound words are stressed on the first word (which vowel, I don't know).
