7 seater automatic car/van

Hi,

Planning to visit England with family next month and we are 6 adults looking to rent a comfortable 7 seater automatic car for 3 days.

I didn't find anything suitable in Limerick.

Could you please suggest where I could get a nice automatic 7-seater?

Assuming you are coming in via Shannon or Cork airport you could go Sixt they have 7 seater Galaxy Auto's listed at €339 per day. Pretty sure most of the rental companies have search engines that will narrow the search down easily enough

Edit BTW are you visiting Limerick or England?

Make sure you're covered for taking the rental car abroad - you may have to pay an extra charge for this (eg, Enterprise charge an extra 150 euro). It must be declared to the rental company.

The problem is that no rental company guarantees a car model they say you'll get a car in the same segment. So you could think you're getting a Galaxy (~300l boot) and end up with a Touran(~150l boot) , so be careful of luggage if you are using all 7 seats.

I live in Limerick and want to visit England. I have a 5 seater car which is not sufficient and that's why looking to rent a bigger car.

I will keep in mind to inform the rental car company about visiting UK. The prices are very high!

If it was me I would fly to England and pre-book one at one of the airport rental companies, 7-8 seater vans here are huge money to rent. Boat journey with the rental car would be circa €750 return with 6 passengers during summer plus fuel costs to factor in.

Yes, you're right that it's costing a lot to rent a 7 seater from Ireland and then top up the boat cost + fuel cost.

I will check if there are flights to Chester (that's what we want to visit) and it's near Holyhead.

Nearest airport to Chester would be Manchester I think approx 53 Km mostly MWay

Ryan Air flights Cork to Manchester return 6 x €166 €996 with 10kg carry on bags

Sixt Hire Manchester for VW Caddy 7 seater Automatic £447 (€525 approx according to Xe.com )

Seems expensive when you add in the car and any extras but that's for you and the others to decide, have fun whichever way you decide

Could one of the others not bring their car as well? Could then split the passenger and luggage load between both which would probably be far more comfortable too.

They should fly to UK. Rent a car there you drive yours to meet them. 2 cars most sensible and probably cost effective.

They are non-EU nationals, they have to land in Ireland due to the visa conditions and then can visit UK. This ads up another layer of stress. But thanks for the suggestions.

What are you doing in Chester that needs a car? Would it be cheaper to fly to Manchester/Liverpool and use public transport?

Visiting our family in Chester followed by Chester zoo visit.

Public transport will be difficult.

I used them earlier this year and got great prices. Just make sure its in Terminal as otherwise it could be any cowboy operation.

I found Skoda Kodiaq as 7 seater but the third row looks very cramped for long haul journeys.

I will search for a van as an alternative.

You can get a train from Holyhead to Chester, you can even get combined rail and sail tickets covering you as foot passengers on the ferry. Add in a few taxi fares in Chester for the local trips and you're sorted at a much lower cost than renting a 7 seater here plus paying for the car on the ferry.
