The big thing when the debates come around is that Trump's rhetoric is even more extreme than when he was president. Plus he's wide open with the criminal charges etc. Biden will trounce him and the Trump fans will latch onto memes.

He has skipped the GOP debates - he may even skip them when it's just the two or three left? - I wonder would Trump be so arrogant and bold to refuse debating Biden as well? He must surely know he'll struggle again even before the ammunition of his criminality is brought up.

He just refuses to debate, doubles down on the conspiracy angle and lets the chaos reign?

You are aware of the weather conditions their? Its absolutely savage .

DeSantis had the supposedly stronger ground game and had Kim Reynolds put the work in while Haley spent plenty of money on it towards the end.

It doesn't mean Biden should panic , but suggesting it was not a good night for Trump is wishful thinking unfortunately.

I am yes, but aren’t his followers his die hards?

Around 56,000 turned out to vote, just over half voted for him. Regardless of how much of a success this is for Trump, the GOP can’t be singing a great tune right now either.

Fully agree that Trump's rhetoric is more extreme. The problem is he's done a job of normalising that rhetoric or, if not normalising it, there is a risk of becoming jaded to it, given how often Trump is in the news.

The kind of criminal charges Trump is under wouldn't have just sunk previous presidential hopefuls, but they obviously wouldn't have even considered running, and that's if they didn't go on the run or something beforehand. But Trump and his base do not feel that kind of shame and there is no legal barrier to a convicted felon running for the presidency. It's a pretty strange loophole that you cannot vote as a convicted felon but you can run for the country's highest political office.

There should be no assumption that Biden will trounce Trump, and it's certainly not what early polls are indicating, anyway. A similar level of engagement will probably be needed as in 2020 to keep Trump out of the Oval Office.

Genuine question - if Biden is brain-dead and in decline, how did he beat Trump so convincingly in their two head to head debates? The first Trump performance in particular had to be among the worst ever of any candidate for president.

I don't know.... Take your pick of these.

The Democrats had him on a carefully selected cocktail of medications.

    He was a hologram.

    It was a body double.

He boosted his life force by drinking the blood of a child recently murdered by Hillary Clinton in the basement of a local pizza restaurant.

He had special teleprompter contact lenses.

Endless ways to warp reality to explain away simple facts. The more bizarre and fantastical, the better the MAGA base like it.

You can't logic people out of a position they didn't logic themselves into. People like the MAGA loons in the US have nothing - no heart, no achievements, no empathy, no hustle and certainly no success. Foreigners coming to America and making a go of it just proves what they know to be true, that they have only themselves to blame for their own situation. Triggering the libs is all they have and they'll burn anything and everything to do it, even their own country and constitution.

No Covid this time to save Biden. He is royally fked!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Its possible it doesn't mean a great deal, yeah turnout was low but it was still a crushing victory in a state he was not bothered about and up against a guy who had a lot of the Iowa infrastructure on his side while Haley spent a fortune towards the end their.

And then the weather and how uncompetitive it was compared to 2016.

The next few primaries will tell us more, but its nowhere as bad as the pro Biden media are spinning and maybe their is a few things to wary about from a Trump POV.

Standing on a wet floor too. This is pure NSFW content. I think the MAGA's will need a smoke and a lie down after seeing that.

He polled lower than in 2020, this is far from “crushing” at all. If anything it’s a bigger sign that the GOP in general might be in a spot of bother.

Trump was always going to win this, the numbers point towards a lacklustre performance.

Plus, given a significant chunk of Haley voters admitted they'd simply transfer their vote to Biden when the time comes? That's a pretty bold statement of intent from what should have read like a degree of party unity in traditional Republican voting pools. I don't doubt Trump will ultimately be the Candidate, but it's not cut and dry IMO.

The MAGA cults over there, and schoolyard posters here might like to trumpet about Trump's energy(!?) or his inevitable romp back to the White House but he is now something he wasn't in 2016 - a Known Quantity. Lowercase R republicans obviously have a track record to examine now and if Haley's supporters - however smaller they are in comparison with Trump - are saying Biden's the better choice it also incurs the obvious follow-up theorising about what wandering, unattached voters think of the choice here.

2016 had the smell of "Fúck it, give the CEO guy a go"; 2024 won't be that punt anymore, it'll be a choice to give the guy who whirled about adding nothing but chaos in the end, another go at that same chaotic angle. Or stick with a centrist corporate Democrat who those small-R types can hold their own noses for.

It's worth noting that Trump increased his vote tally in 2020 as a known quantity and secured the most votes of any Republican candidate in history. Biden would need 2020 levels of voter engagement in order to be victorious, because assuming the Trump vote will drop off seems incredibly dangerous.

Playing devils advocate. Biden's vote will go down but so will trump's.

I'm not anti vax but there is a sizeable minority of trump supporters from 2016 and 2020 that will no longer vote for him as he supported the "global hoax" of covid and the vaccine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,518 ✭✭✭✭briany

So, you're saying that Trump's vote will go down because a big chunk of voters feel he wasn't conspiratorial ENOUGH?

Where are these people? Are they organising in any way that gives us a good idea of their number?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,639 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Look at any extreme MAGA post on X. Or alternatively, look at well known GOP supporters that backed trump in 2020 but don't now. An example would be the founder of Gays against Groomers who while being a loud republican is firmly pro desantis and anti trump this time.

Not saying its all of them but these posts and people would represent a segment of the silent majority who voted trump in 2016 and less so in 2020

We have to assume that they don't care about him being a rapist, but don't want to have to admit it in public. Possibly they buy into the "imperfect vessel" shtick that the evangelicals came up with, or maybe they simply don't think rape is a big deal. But either way, they know they will be crucified for saying that out loud, so just pretend the question was never asked.

I think it's supposed to be some sort of suave tactic where we look like fools for not being able to compute that one can be against both. They inevitably blow it is the problem with almost every word by defending an actual Nazi.

Nope that's not what happened at all. You are just discrediting your own posts at every turn with this charade now.

Any excuse to ignore reality so you can keep posting nonsense in defence of a rapist.

In May 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a separate case, awarding Carroll $5 million in damages.

What the jury found Trump did was in fact rape
