    hi....

we are thinking of buying land (commercial land or farm land)as an investment.

we are just wondering will it affect our council house like do we have to give it up

if anybody knows anything about this please leave a comment

I would question how you can afford an investment like that rather than funding a mortgage on your own property?

I hope it would affect the council house.

What hope do we have? It looks like the OP has bettered themselves however sees the council house as a permanent asset, not a help up. "When all you've known is privilege, equality feels like oppression".

Take a low paid job, get the council house for life, then get the high paid job you actually have the qualifications for and you’ve hit the jackpot.

    Great wee country.

Or throw your passport away at the airport and ask for a hotel :D

OP there's a lot of shite being talked here.

Your council tenancy is for life or as long as you want, provided you pay the rent and don't do anti-social behaviour.

    So work away.

It would be nice if you managed to house yourself and so moved out - but it's not required.

(This is not how I personally think things SHOULD be - but it's how they ARE.)

And it's Mrs O', from the top ropes with yet another completely out of touch take on societal issues. As per.

Anyone who is dependent upon the state to house them has a moral and ethical obligation to relinquish that property back to the state once they can afford to look after themselves. Doubly so during a housing crisis. This SHOULD also be a legal obligation, and as far as I'm aware there are mechanisms in place to prevent this type of scenario from occurring.

Someone buying land as an investment while living in a council property is either under-declaring their income, have gotten the income illegally or both. Isn't the rent means tested? A friend of mine had to move out of her parents house when she got a decent job at age 18 because the rent went from something like €30 per week to €350+ due to her wages coming in.

Local authority tenancies are for life.

There is a TD on 105k in a local authority tenancy.

What you describe perhaps should be the case, but it is not.

LA rents are linked to income, yes.

If the income in the house increases, then the rent increases.

But, AFAIK, there is a max rent.

So the TD on 107k in a LA tenancy will still be paying below market rents.

I hope so, use whatever investment funds you have towards your own housing needs.

Would it not be a better idea to use the funds to try and better yourself than a council house?

    Apt username.

Feel free to tell us details of those mechanisms.

But give the fairytales a miss: 350 a month would be believable. 350 a week isn't.

Yep. I bought & sold an ex-council house & a few of the neighbours (who received council houses) have land, holiday homes in Ireland and one has two foreign properties. Some are second generation but most were first hand recipients.

Isn't this just a fantastic country, we should all pat ourselves on the back for housing people that are so well off that they can buy investment properties.

Anywhere else you'd be paying more than 15% of your income, that's if you bother to pay the rent.

Yes but what's your point? Some people have more ambition in life than a council house. You can't just say oh but it will cost me more.
