This one might also be relevant. The question would be whether devices being used in the fraud now could be called computers.

It might well be, but I would have a query about that, namely, that act appears to deal with "ownership" for the most part, which as I understand it is not the same as being the copyright holder of something.
This is probably why a separate copyright infringement act was necessary.

You say that but then offer no evidence to support the claim. Your choice to believe what you like

I really don't think they would go after the individuals for just streaming, they can't penalize half the country. All they need to do is contact the ISPs or the VPNs showing that such an IP address is delivering illegal services and require them to shut off that IP address.

Cardsharing on satellite used to be far superior for sports due to the clarity and speed of motion. However if Sky are really thinking of migrating to streaming-only services for some people maybe they're now competitive in quality (probably Sky are thinking of doing it to cut costs and hope people don't notice a big difference). This all assuming you have a perfectly fast connection yourself. The downside is you can only get the channels your satellite can pick up while in IPTV you can get them from around the world.

The licence fee takes huge man hours and information. And they struggle.

They can't go after everyone. Especially as many don't have any knowledge of their "firestick" other than its dodgy.

Good luck if they're going to get info from VPNs. Their whole job is to be elusive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,008 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

If you choose your VPN carefully you can be as sure as possible that you cannot be identified even via VPN logs. Nothing is 100%, but the closer it is to 100% the more effort it would take to get any usable information from your VPN.

If this is to be believed - and it has been audited - then this is about as secure as you will find.

That would be the same company that handed over user data before despite a no logs policy.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-58476983

Its fairly pricey at 120 a year.

    So my point is proven.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,967 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

That is not ProtonVPN, that is ProtonMail, same company different services.

They are based in Switzerland, under Swiss privacy laws they can be compelled to turn on a certain level of logging for email but not for VPN.

So to support your view you link to an instance of a legal requirement to provide emails.

That has nothing at all to do with the VPN service.

    Try again!

In addition you claim it costs €120 per year, which is clearly false.

It costs exactly half of that.

The only proof you have shown is that you are deliberately attempting to spread false information.

I can see your head is in the clouds.

The naivety of people who think email data is the same as VPN data. Declaring your own point "proven" will not save you.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,432 ✭✭✭irishgeo

They offers say for the first 12 months if you read the small print.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,008 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

Well 12 months is a year where I come from.

But you can have the same price per year if you want two years.

Best to stop digging when you are in a hole!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,432 ✭✭✭irishgeo

It still goes up to a 120 euro a year after the 2 years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,967 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

    Switch to another one then.

This isn't very hard to be fair.

Why do people refer to these devices as "dodgy boxes?"

Most of them are perfectly legal, nothing dodgy about them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,924 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

It's the ones that are not perfectly legal that are dodgy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 davemaur

They've been saying this for years.

    Lol.

Regardless of using a vpn you will not be targeted for iptv. It wont happen.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,175 ✭✭✭ooter

Can someone give me an example of a "box" that's dodgy, is an Amazon fire stick dodgy?

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,924 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

The ones that are not perfectly legal. You know about them already.

  • Registered Users Posts: 858 ✭✭✭timetogo1

A box (android or otherwise) that has apps installed to stream copyrighted content from illegal sources.

I know you can install some of these apps to android on TVs but that definition fits 90% of what people call "dodgy boxes"

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,967 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

The phrase came from Card Sharing years ago.

You would buy the sat tuner or cable tuner with c-lines preloaded. You can still do this AFAIK.

The hardware is perfectly legitimate, it's in fact the software and what it does is "dodgy".

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,175 ✭✭✭ooter

Exactly, the vast majority of devices you can buy are perfectly legal and not dodgy at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,924 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

But it's the ones which are not in the vast majority which are dodgy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,175 ✭✭✭ooter

I don't know of any devices/boxes that are illegal but keep hearing there are devices that are, I'd love to know which ones are so I'll know to avoid them if I'm offered one or see one on sale online or in store.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,008 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

    As explained above …

    the hardware is NOT illegal
It is the use to which it is put that can be illegal.

Some come preinstalled with software that facilitates illegal use.

    Sky Sports + Launched

    • Sky Sports customers can enjoy over 50% more live sport this year
    • Four times as many matches from the EFL with all 72 teams featured over 20 times a season
    • Every match from the men’s Super League and coverage from the ATP & WTA Tours, US Open, PGA Tour and more all available via live streams
    • Sky Sports + offers the capability to show up to 100 events concurrently
    • Integrated into Sky TV, streaming service NOW and the new, improved Sky Sports mobile app - providing a more personalised experience, making it easier for fans to follow their teams and sports

Launching this August, Sky Sports+ will be transformational in the amount of choice sports fans will have access to via live streams, the mobile app and a dedicated new channel, all at no extra cost. With more coverage than ever before from the EFL, both tennis Tours and men’s Super League, Sky Sports customers can enjoy over 50% more live sport this year.

Integrated into Sky TV, streaming service NOW, and a revamped Sky Sports mobile app, Sky Sports+ will make it easier for fans to browse, discover and watch the sport they love. With the capability to show up to 100 live events via concurrent streams, fans will have more choice than ever before on what to watch, while the dedicated Sky Sports+ linear channel will showcase a selection of the best live sport.

Sky Sports+ comes at the start of a new long-term and landmark partnership with the EFL, with over 1,000 EFL games a season featuring every team more than 20 times, and every Championship club on at least 24 occasions. The scale of Sky Sports+ will be evident from the opening weekend of the 2024/25 season, with every game from across all three divisions - the Championship, League One and League Two - streamed live, a first in broadcasting history.

Jonathan Licht, Managing Director at Sky Sports, said: “Exceptional sport, covered in an innovative and compelling way, has been a big part of our history. With the introduction of Sky Sports+, we are now able to offer sport fans more choice and an even better experience when watching the live action, at no extra cost.

“For the first time, we will broadcast every game live from across the EFL on the opening weekend. It’s going to be a huge moment for football fans up and down the country and is a fitting way to kick off our ground-breaking new partnership with the EFL. And this is just the beginning; Sky Sports+ unlocks the potential for us to keep evolving and finding new ways to deliver brilliant sport to our customers.”

It’s not just greater choice that subscribers can look forward to; Sky Sports+ will give exclusive access to Sky’s great sports documentaries, such as the much-anticipated Darts documentary, two weeks before anyone else. With new and enhanced features, the viewing experience will be more immersive for fans, giving greater optionality on how they watch their favourite sport. Live pause and rewind will be available on all concurrent streams, and the ‘Recap’ feature currently available for Premier League and Championship games will also be made available for EFL games shown on the Sky Sports+ linear channel.

Once live, customers with a full Sky Sports subscription won’t need to do a thing; Sky Sports+ will simply drop into the existing Sky experience, across Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q, and NOW.

The revamped Sky Sports app will also become the ultimate home of sports streaming on mobile devices with Sky Sports+ streams accessible via event centres in the app. New personalisation features will help fans follow their favourite teams and competitions more easily. An improved multi-sports scores section will offer fixtures, live scores and an extended view beyond the usual seven-day football calendar. Refreshed design and navigation, including a much-requested dark mode will improve usability.

For instant, contract-free access to all Sky Sports channels, non-Sky subscribers can purchase a NOW Sports Day or Month Membership. From August, this will also include every single live Sky Sports+ stream and on demand catch-up content. As part of the Sky Sports+ launch, NOW members will also be able to pause and rewind live sports content for the first time.

The full Sky Sports package includes an unrivalled line-up of sport and record audiences tuned in during 2023. Football fans can watch more coverage of domestic leagues with Sky Sports than any other broadcaster, including Premier League, EFL, SPFL, and WSL. Through long-term deals, sport fans can continue to enjoy award-winning coverage of Formula 1 and England domestic cricket. 2024 has also seen the return of tennis and a ground-breaking Super League deal where every match will be covered live. This, on top every golf Major, NFL, netball, darts, boxing, summer rugby union internationals, means that Sky Sports has something for every sports fan.
