Half-rate carer's and work/study

Hi there,

I'm presently receiving half-rate Carer's and I'm trying to figure out if the work/study conditions for full-rate Carer's allowance apply to it; that is, you are only allowed to work/study for no more than 18.5 hours per week. I'm thinking about doing a Springboard course in Jan (fully online), and I imagine the full-time option will be quite intense, whereas the part-time option will be half that (closer to the 18.5 hours per week mark). I tempted to go for the full-time option just to speed it up, but will I be allowed to and keep my half-rate carer's?

No. You can only be engaged in work, training or education for no more than 18.5 hours per week.

If you start any one of these, you are obliged to notify them with details of whichever it is, the job or the course .

Your carers will stop instantly when they see that it’s full time.

You are getting 1/2 rare carers not because you are only caring for the person part time, but because you are caring for them full time ( the only way you can get carers) but either you are already getting a SW payment in your own right or someone else is claiming you as a QA on their SW payment.

Thanks for replying. I get what you are saying and so I'll just do the part-time course then.

If the part time course is more than 18.5 hours you will also lose your carers on that, even if it’s only 2 minutes more.

Oof! Okay, I didn't know that they were so particular with this. I'll tread carefully and get all the details before I commit. Thanks a lot for this.

It is 18.5 hours specifically. 18.75 hours means you are automatically disqualified.
