ah that’s brilliant that you passed, I’m delighted for you. I did email HR about the whole notice period issue and was assured that although they don’t recommend you give notice before you’ve passed the medical, that the medical is the last and final stage of the entire process before contract so that gives me good hope that it’ll be fine! Fingers crossed anyway!

Hi congrats on passing, in relation to the Chester step test do you have to complete all 5 levels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 taramc95

anyone have difficulty passing the C1? I failed on my first go yesterday and have to test again. I’ve already spent a fortune on lessons!

Not necessarily, as far as I could tell it is calculated by age, fitness level etc so they will stop it once u have reached the heart rate that they have calculated for you individually....im sure some very fit people may be required to continue up to level 5 but others will reach their target bpm before this and that is okay. It is only if ur bpm climbs faster then it should that it would be a problem. Try to keep as calm as possible b4 starting, don't over think it and try focus ur mind on something else so u don't get nervous & drive ur heart beat up too soon. I distracted myself by looking out the window which must have worked.😅 and it's helpful to change ur lead leg every now and then so one leg doesn't take all the strain. Hope this helps and best of luck to anyone yet to take their medical.

Hi does anyone know do you have to have a clean drivers licence in order to secure a position as a student paramedic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 Nevanna1

Congrats on passing! Do you mind me asking what level you got to? I have mine on Wednesday and I’m a bit worried! Also; is it a standard 30cm step or was there any choice? Thanks so much!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 Kitkat73

A choice of 2 sizes depending on ur height which was a big relief for me as I'm not the tallest and 30cm would have been challenging. I was 3/4 way through level 4 when doctor stopped me. Very best of luck on Wednesday. It's honestly not as bad as you would think. They're very nice.

have my Chester step test tomorrow and am quite nervous. I consider myself fit but god knows, what’s the pass rate I wonder

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 HannahSpanner

I asked the Dr when I did mine as I have a high heart rate (despite being very fit) and I knew they stop based on heartrate rather than exertion so was a little worried, she said roughly 5 mins if you can stay on the step without your heartrate elevating to the 80%, which is about half way through level 3 on the test………there are variables of age and gender which will mean the vo2 max number this test calculates might work out a little different for each person - so pass rate number could be higher or lower depending on this. Best of luck with your test 🤞

Hi guys - just checking, once contracts have been signed and sent back is that a 100% done and in? 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭kahmen

Did you get your contract?/ When was you medical (( but yes from my understanding you are

Yes had my medical 2 weeks ago and got my contract early last week so that side is all done now thankfully - I’m still a bit nervous to put an end and give notice on everything (even though it says congratulations and best of luck 🙈) so yes, assuming it’s all done and a 100% 🤞

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 Kitkat73

Hi Hannahspanner, I am the same as you. Electronically signed all the paper work they emailed to me and it's been submitted. Got an acknowledgement email back straight after so it definitely went through but im not sure what next step is. 🤔. It did say somewhere in the contracting "please present for training on Jan 6th at Tullamore" but never gave time or any more details. I just presume more information will arrive between here and xmas? Are u Tallaght or Tullamore? From what I recall they are slightly different start dates but not by much. I'm nearing the point of having to give my current job my notice but I'd prefer if I had more definite information about the January start. I presume we're okay though.

I signed my contract for tullamore in January, does anyone have any idea what we do or where we look for accomodation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭Tango Alpha 51

@SP488, usually a number of students opt to share a house or else they book one of the hotels. I am back to work on Friday night & if there is any students on placement I will ask the name of the hotel(s) for you

Hi. I am aiming apply in the next recruitment campaign but I was just wondering if yous could recommend anything that would help me get accepted? I've secured my c1 provisional, starting lessons in the new year, recently undertaken a first aid responder course too. Any hints and tips I'd welcome if possible? Should I start preparing for a physical etc, any other training that might help me stand out? I'd be nearly 40 and it'd be a big career change for me, one I wanted for years so really want to be as prepared as possible. thanks all in advance if yous can help 😊

Hi I am 45 and doing a career change also. I am starting in January. The whole process takes a long time. I did 3 weeks training for the medical and passed. You only do the physical once you get offered a place which for me was nearly a year after I got on panel. I had no C license till this year so you have plenty of time. The interview focuses mainly on how you can cope in stressful situations so I found it easy as had lots of life experience to draw on to discuss. You could join order of Malta or St John's ambulance also to get some experience! Also I bought the career services online package to help me study the verbal and reasoning aptitude test. Would highly recommend it. Not sure would have passed otherwise! Best of luck 😊

I’m Tallaght so start date of a week later on the 13th. Yes I got the acknowledgment email too, but like you I’d definitely like a bit more specific information - I’d imagine with so many to get the fitness test and blood tests etc they will probably have to wait until they are all fully confirmed and contracted before sending that out just incase they can offer extra spaces as a result of any fitness tests not being passed maybe 🤔 Hopefully that final info will come soon 🤞

I’m also doing this as a career change…….for the reasoning tests I bought the psychometric tests for dummies book to practice. The interview is after you have passed the reasoning tests and is based on the answers you give in your application form alongside questions about the ambulance service itself. Getting the C1 lessons done out the way is handy, I’m so glad I’ve got that ticked off and taken my test now so I don’t have to even think about that. The only thing is it does take quite a lot of time, just the way it works in order of applications and previous panels - whoever is already on the panels ahead of you will be offered positions first. So once you’ve applied and gone to the first stage you’ll be another few months to interview, and then you’ll be placed in order of merit based off where you scored overall compared to everyone else interviewed at the same time (anyone else ahead of you both on your own panel and any panels ahead will get offers first) so obviously you want to score as high on your own panel as possible - so let’s say you get the highest mark out of all candidates applying with you then you would be number 1 on your panel, but if there are 200 people on the previous panel / panels you would be position number 201.

I’ve seen previous panels saying they had gotten offers within 6 months, but I think most of the current people starting in Jan would be on the same panel or previous panel to mine which would’ve been Oct 2023 interviews.

The physical isn’t done until an offer has been accepted - but I’d still start getting into a good exercise routine, definitely better to go into it knowing you are really fit and feeling good about it than any nervousness or potentially failing and falling at the final hurdle after 1-2years waiting 🙈

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 taramc95

Hi guys. Just wondering if anyone who has done the course can shed some light on the first few weeks, I believe it’s an induction, just wondering if anyone has any info on what that entails regards scheduling and content.

Hi , is anyone here heading to Ballinasloe and have any ideas on hotels or accommodation? Looking to house share if anyone knows anywhere :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 njd3903

Hi Shauna, heading Ballinasloe as well, I will try and figure out how to pm you as found accommodation but not sure if there's still space there but she should know others with space if not

Hi , Heading to Ballinasloe on the 20th of Jan anyone with any advice on accommodation would be greatly appreciated:)

Reminder to all that you do not need a years lease or rental. You will be in the college for 3 months at the start of the year. 2 weeks in the middle of the year, and 5 weeks towards the end.

Most do hotels or room rentals from a closed circle of houses that are word of mouth only. I don't have any connections to these rooms so cant help you there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 219 ✭✭sudocremegg

Induction is 2 weeks. It entails introductions (stand up with a microphone say your name, tell us about you what you like), Welcome, tons of policies and procedures, fire training (generic this is a co2 extinguisher etc), manual handling, CFR-A drills over and over again, broken into syndicates, start practicing very basic skills before the lectures start, fear put into you.

Then 3 shifts of observer placement on week 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 taramc95

    thanks for that, appreciate it!
