Rim Protector & Removal

Bought a 192 A6 a while back and it had some kind of plastic protectors on the rims. Matched the alloy colour well and stuff plus they are pretty skinny so not that obvious.

Nevertheless, I don't like them and the alloys seem in good condition without any kerbing etc. so I took one off this afternoon.....the plastic came off easy but my God, I've spent hours trying to get the damn glue or whatever stuff they use to stick the protector to the rims. Millimetre by millimetre..... soap, WD40, nothing helped. Eventually got it all off but my poor fingernails are in in smithereens.

Before I tack into the others, is there any stuff that can be used and make it a more straightforward job? I won't go near the others if I have to go through that again.

I don't know why anyone would stick those things on in the first place.

New Stanley blade used at an angle? Saw some can of aerosol in the hardware one day - sticky stuff remover. Might be worth a shot.

Acetone. Would that affect any lacquer or anything I wonder.

Actually, methylated spirits worked very well. Now the problem is, as I half feared before, the damn glue or the plastic holding water against the rim itself, has damaged the finish on the alloy. I don't suppose that can be fixed without a full refurb? This is an example of the back wheel.

Dammit. I guess the only other option is to buy more of those things and stick them on again....
