Hi, has anyone here experience of owning an Opel Astra/Insignia/Mokka with the 1.6 diesel engine. Seem to be popular and economical etc but a search on Google mentions timing chain rattle, does it affect all of them or just a case of bad luck with a few?

A family member had a Mokka with that engine. She had nothing but trouble with it, timing chain started rattling due to stretching and then the turbo went on it. She got rid of it in the end.

One of the worst engines Opel have ever made. The problem with the timing chains on these is that its basically located in the middle of the engine and not on the outside like a normal engine.

To do the job its engine out and the labour costs are nuts as in 16 hours whereas most other cars with a chain can be done in 4-5 hours- we used to charge 2500 just to do the chains on them. Id avoid one like the plague.

And thats before I get into clutch master / slave cylinder issues on the astra.

Take my advice and run away if you have any doubts especially if the chain is in any way noisy.
