Ok, so let me get this straight. The most hostages recovered during so far was during a ceasefire and an exchange was brokered. Israel has rescued a grand total of 3 and probably killed more hostages than that while killing over 30,000 Palestinians. So, why no ceasefire?

If hostilities die down Israelis will demand elections.

    Overthrow the Govt.

"It's hard to accept the claims by Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant that the series of [operational] achievements will bring about Hamas' defeat, perhaps quite soon" - Amos Harel

    Haaretz:

    • PM Netanyahu responded to what he called "recent talk about forcing a Palestinian state on Israel," adding that "Israel rejects out of hand international diktats about a final-status solution with the Palestinians."
    • Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz told the Munich Security Conference that Israel has no plans to deport Palestinians from Gaza. Katz said that Israel will coordinate with Egypt on Palestinian refugees and will find a way to not harm Egypt's interests.
    • Israeli President Isaac Herzog met Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, where they discussed the release of hostages held by Hamas.
    • Defense chief Yoav Gallant said Israel possesses intel indicating over 30 UNRWA employees actively participated in Hamas' October 7 attack. He disclosed the identities of 12 such workers, including those involved in abductions of civilians and soldiers.
    • Hundreds of protesters rallied in front of the houses of Israeli coalition members, calling for the overthrow of the government.

Approaching the 100K mark, asking the ICJ to dismiss an SA request, withholding humanitarian aid and more pressure from hostage families (leading to nothing)

    • The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry says four patients died Friday morning due to a power outage that cut the oxygen supply in Khan Yunis' Nasser Hospital, where the IDF continues to operate.
    • The IDF initially said it entered the hospital complex following intelligence regarding the possibility of Israeli hostages being held there, and later said it found medicine there labeled with the names of Israeli hostages. The IDF said it arrested dozens of suspects, including over 20 terrorists who took part in the October 7 massacre.
    • The World Health Organization said it was trying to get access to Nasser Hospital, warning that "There are still critically injured and sick patients inside."
    • The Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry said at least 28,775 Palestinians have been killed and 68,552 wounded since the war began.
    • RAFAH OFFENSIVE: White House spokesperson John Kirby said on Thursday that the U.S. believes that under the current circumstances, without a credible plan to account for Palestinian civilians that are sheltering in Rafah, "a major operation would be a disaster."
    • PM Netanyahu held a 40-minute phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden, during which Biden "raised the situation in Rafah, and reiterated his view that a military operation should not proceed without a credible and executable plan for ensuring the safety of and support for the civilians" there, the White House said.
    • War cabinet minister Benny Gantz said the fighting in Gaza will continue until the hostages are returned: "Even in the approaching month of Ramadan, the firing can continue. Either our hostages will be returned, or we will expand the fighting to Rafah."
    • Egypt is setting up a huge walled enclosure in the Sinai Desert bordering Gaza as part of a contingency plan if there is a mass migration of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
    • Displaced Gazans broke through to the Palestinian side of Rafah crossing, burning tires outside the entrance. Gaza border authority sources said they are displaced people who were sheltering near the crossing, and that they stormed aid trucks entering Rafah. Hamas police officers arrived at the scene to repel the crowds.
    • Israel has asked the International Court of Justice in The Hague to dismiss a request by South Africa to issue additional emergency measures over Israel's plan to extend its offensive in Gaza into the city of Rafah.

    • PM Netanyahu met CIA director William Burns in Israel, and told him that Israel will not agree to more humanitarian gestures for Gaza "until we receive concrete proof that the hostages received the medicine that was sent to them," a diplomatic source said.
    • Families of the American hostages welcomed the CIA director's visit, calling it "imperative" for the U.S. "to pressure Israeli leadership … to urgently create favorable conditions for a deal that returns the hostages safely and swiftly."
    • The families of the hostages still held in Gaza protested alongside their supporters in front of Israel's army HQ on Thursday, calling for a deal to secure their release.
    • Former hostage Moran Stela Yanai and Ruby Chen, the father of hostage Itay Chen, called on Israel's government to reach a deal in Cairo for the release of hostages after PM Netanyahu ordered Israel's delegation not to return for continuing talks.

Selling genocide as entertainment for kids. As I mentioned before, there is something messed up with Israelis. And they complain about Hamas indoctrinating children.

Obviously there's a long list of things wrong with RTE, so not surprising to see this one.

I don't understand why they don't have the same thirst for "impartiality" when sealing with the Ukraine and Russia war.

Not all Palestinian journalists are part of hamas security and intelligence, there probably are a few that are not.

Hamas decided to end the first one, the next 2 or 3 deals were rebuffed by them and the current offer is being considered by them but their demands are like they have won the war, rather than have their assault beaten back.

Hamas could have ended this months ago but are committed to war.

ICJ rejects SA request, protests against Netanyahu, UNWRA employee identified.

    Haaretz:

Joe Biden said he doesn't anticipate Israel executing a "massive land invasion" in the southern Gazan city of Rafah, and added that a temporary cease-fire is necessary to secure the release of the hostages held by Hamas.

A senior Hamas official told Al Jazeera that the organization will freeze negotiations on a hostage release/cease-fire deal with Israel until humanitarian aid enters northern Gaza.

Hamas head Ismail Haniyeh blamed Israel for lack of progress in securing a cease-fire agreement, and reasserted that Hamas will not accept anything less than a complete cease-fire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, "and the lifting of the unjust siege."

The recognition of a Palestinian state is no longer a taboo for France, President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday, suggesting Paris could make the decision to officially recognize Palestine if efforts for a two-state solution stalled because of Israeli opposition.

In a joint statement, released hostages Louis Norberto Har and Fernando Marman, who were freed by the IDF earlier this week, said that not all hostages "can be rescued in heroic operations," and urged PM Netanyahu to send a delegation to Cairo to discuss a hostage deal with Hamas as soon as possible.

The International Court of Justice at The Hague rejected a South African request to impose additional urgent measures to safeguard Rafah in southern Gaza ahead a possible Israeli ground offensive, but also stressed that Israel must respect earlier measures imposed late last month at a preliminary stage in a landmark genocide case.

A UN relief worker, Faisal Ali Musalam Naami, was seen "on video on [October 7removing the limp body of an Israeli man who had been shot in Kibbutz Be'eri and driving off with it," according to The Washington Post. Naami was one of a dozen UNRWA employees accused by Israel of participating in Hamas' October 7attack.

The chairman of Israel's largest labor union, Arnon Bar-David, said Israel needs to set a date for general elections in December and PM Netanyahu "should take responsibility for what happened, and then make his decisions for himself. I would quit if I were him."

Protests against the Netanyahu governmentand in favor of early elections are taking place across the country. At the same time, the weekly rally for the release of the hostages will be held in Tel Aviv.

There is an "extraordinary opportunity" in the months ahead for Israel to be integrated into the Middle East as Arab countries are willing to normalize ties with the country, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at the Munich Security Conference. German Chancellor Scholz said Germany was asking Israel to abide by international law in Gaza and not to open a second front on its northern border with Lebanon, while adding it should be made impossible for Iran to exploit the conflict to expand its influence.

I wouldn't categorise the Israeli attack as "an assault" - I'd prefer "genocidal retribution".

In what way are Hamas committed to war - do you mean in general or in this campaign?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,176 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

So is the Rafah operation going ahead then or just not what is being categorised as a massive land invasion?

Yesterday Biden said an offensive was not expected

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,032 ✭✭✭circadian

Sorry, what? Hamas decided to end the first one? Netanyahu explicitly stated that the war would continue after it. The claim that Hamas broke it, is simply just that. A claim. No evidence was ever provided. Regardless, Israel were going to continue hostilities anyway.

Have you got any sources for the subsequent 2 or 3 deals? I can't really find anything on them other than a proposal put forward by the Egyptians for a reform of the Gazan government.

Judging by what has been repeated, time and time again, by the Israeli government. They also seem only committed to war.

They've said one thing to the Americans and done the opposite several times. It would not be surprising in the least if that is what happens again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,176 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Crazy since the Americans could give them a couple of bn in the next few weeks if they ever get a version of Israel-Ukraine bill through.

Netanyahu confirmed ground operations in Rafah will coincide with the forcible transfer of already displaced Palestinians.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,084 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

So they will take time to relocate the civilian population away from the thousands of jihadi fighters who are using them as cover.

That's a good thing, bad thing for those who want more dead civilians for their own political reasons.

Israel will lose soldiers because of that desire to protect Palestinian civilians in Rafah.

It's the right thing to do but not many would do it and hopefully kindness will not be taken as weakness and invite more attacks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,176 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

The only ones who are killing the civilians are the Israelis. Those against the continued operations by Israel are against the continued killing of civilians, especially women and children.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,934 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

It's likely that both Hamas and Israel broke the first ceasefire. The IDF targeted Hamas operatives hours after the ceasefire was implemented. Hamas fired rockets during the last hours of the ceasefire.

As you well know Bibi is also committed to this war to try and save his own skin. The last thing he wanted was Hamas to give up. He explicitly stated that any ceasefire would be temporary.
