Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sure Mahmoud Abbas is 88 and is 19 years into a 4 year term as President of Palestine. He should be out looking after the garden as well.....

Pat Kenny had an interview with an academic this morning who is a specialist in Middle East affairs. Says Netanyahu is trying to prolong the war to save his own skin but he (the academic) is pessimistic for the long term prospects - he thinks Netanyahu will be replaced by another far right hardliner / extremist and that Israeli public opinion is radicalised against a two state solution.

I had missed this. Former Director of the US State Department highlighted the fact that a charity brought a credible report of a 13 year old Palestinian boy being raped in IDF custody. When the Israeli government were pressed on the issue, by the State Department, the Israeli government raided the charity offices and declared it a terrorist entity.

It's a very strange country. Has the trappings of being a western style democracy with free elections, but mostly operates like an authoritarian, repressive state, especially in connection with anything to do with Palestine.

There seems to be a constant heightened war footing as part of the day to day lived experience in Israel, and this can lead to tolerance of some extreme and prejudicial state activities in the name of 'security'.

The same happened in Northern Ireland when the troubles were in full swing. Tolerance of state repressive violence against the 'other' side, in fact, not just tolerating, but demanding that the other side be repressed even more in search of more security at the cost of civil liberties and the rule of law.

Of course, some of this is justified by the campaigns of violent resistence and even terrorism against Israeli civilians. But the fact that the population are justified in being fearful, does not mean that the state is justified in completely disregarding civil liberties and the rights of the palestinians wherever there is a perceived threat to security.

In a place like israel, there will always be the perception of threat, so it will always become a self fulfulling prophesy. Repression, followed by resistence, followed by crackdowns, followed by more resistence. Years and generations of this cycle causing people to entrench into completely opposing camps where each is totally opposed to the other, and there are enough injustices committed on both sides to fuel an eternity of reprisals of the state permits them, or encourages them.

Ben Gvir wants the genocide to continue and calls for a halt to talks.

I wonder what excuse our resident pro israeli to explain away the murder of these 5 month old twins?

Oh I'm.sure well get the usual blah blah blah Hamas using them as human shields blah blah blah underground tunnels blah blah blah should have moved to a safe are (even though there are no safe areas) but will they really believe their own BS to justify the murder of 5 month old babies?

    It's genocide!

"Rania Abu Anza lost her infant twins in a reported Israeli airstrike on her extended family's home in Rafah on Saturday.

It had taken Ms Abu Anza 10 years and three rounds of IVF to become pregnant with her twins, a boy and a girl, who died aged five months old."

As Beau was saying in a video this week an MRE hardly “expires” it has an inspection date.

It’s essentially misinformation being spread to discourage them from eating perfectly edible foodstuffs. For the record: they’re safe to eat if they are MREs, and everyone should spread the word on that point. Don’t help in people starving to death because a meal was in arms reach but they were afraid of the date on the package.

Yes, very good points. I would liken it to Britain's security response in NI during the 1970s and 1980s but multiplied manifold - they have had literally dozens of Bloody Sunday type incidents in recent decades. Israeli public seems shockingly radicalised after many years of this, they would be akin to the extreme end of NI loyalism and republicanism at the height of the Troubles. 20,000 innocent civilian deaths in Gaza in five months and yet the only thing that keeps them awake at night is their own security.

In every country around the world where people come together there is one overriding theme, people calling for a end to the genocide. Yet the media make a song and dance about the US doing a few aid drops (closely followed bombs provided by the US), there is no mention of the countless events where people are calling for an end to genocide. Politicians in countless governments are calling for an end to the genocide, yet no governments dare criticise the Israeli's. Anti semitism is growing around the world at an exponential rate, unsurprising so.

How can people who were treated so brutally collectively perpetrate the same thing against others. Was it not the Jewish people who stated "never again"? Was that never again to just people of the Jewish faith??????? Israel has guaranteed decades more of anti semitism during a time when people are trying to stamp out prejudice. More generations of Palestinians will hate the Israeli's for their actions now.

I don't think he is trying to prolong the war. Based on the elections last week, it would seem Israeli's still support Netanyahu's coalition government. Of course the longer that goes on, the greater the war fatigue among the electorate. Netanyahu will be acutely aware of pressure at home, and pressure abroad (predominantly from the US) to bring this to a resolution as quickly as possible.

I do think that he is determined to win this war though. He's been pretty emphatic in his aims from day one, that is to remove Hamas from power in Gaza. For Netanyahu to go back on that and agree to a deal to pull out of Gaza and allow Hamas to regain control would be viewed as a defeat. Not only that but it would only give time for Hamas to re-group and re-arm and attack Israel again at a later date. From the perspective of the Israeli government, there is no other choice here but to plough through.

The tweet earlier was false - from 4 months ago, and (at that time) the food was within the expiry date. Could be there's misinformation being spread beyond that tweet though.

    First they used killer drones

Next, coming to a genocide near you.

This is not a war though. A militia like Hamas cannot fight a war. They are vastly outnumbered and out-equipped. The fact that they are still there after 5 months of continuous bombing and sniping just shows that the IDF is a poor outfit and are more concerned with mass murdering of civilians than rooting out the guilty party. All they are doing is ensuring that they have even more enemies in the future to replace Hamas or whatever new outfit replaces them. The IDF are an out of control rabble and have lost any respect they had worldwide.

There was a very low turn out for those local elections, it was mostly the far right who turned out to vote. The most recent polls indicate Nethanyu will be soundly beaten in a general election. The Americans are now even trying to sideline him by having a meeting with Gantz in Washington. Bibi is pissed and reminded Gantz there is only one prime minister. He hopes by continuing the war to crush Hamas so he can eventually rehabilitate his image as Mr Security. So in that sense you are correct he will plough on till the bitter end with the support of his far right friends.

Every weapon "sounds cool" until you're on the wrong end of said weapon.

I don't get the outrage in your original post though. Isn't it logical for a military to take steps to reduce their own potential casualties?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,967 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

It's logical and natural I accept.

Just the horrific vision of Gaza as a bombed out and ruined wasteland, full of starving and desparate people all overwatched in high definition by swarms of robots & automated systems of one of the most tecnologically advanced militaries on the planet tends to give normal people the heeby jeebies, and disgust them.

If your brain can't immediately see the problem with Israel potentially using (robot) dogs in a contained location to kill people, well, I can't help you.

    "people"

No problem whatsoever if they are Hamas terrorists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52,174 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

And nuns. A more dangerous killer doesn't exist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,640 ✭✭✭✭Timberrrrrrrr

"to take steps to reduce their own potential casualties?"

Well if killing 5 month old twin babies isn't going to bother you I suppose roaming packs of killer robot dogs is the logical next step.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,640 ✭✭✭✭Timberrrrrrrr

"to take steps to reduce their own potential casualties?"

Reports coming in of a school bombed by Israel in Gaza where hundreds were sheltering, Anyone want to hazard a guess at the IDF excuse for this one?

    A: Misfires Hamas rocket?

    B: Hamas were hiding there?

    C: Hamas tunnels/command center?

D: Those kids looked at us wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,640 ✭✭✭✭Timberrrrrrrr

"to take steps to reduce their own potential casualties?"

And now Reports coming in of yet another israeli attack on people trying to get food from aid trucks at the Kuwaiti roundabout.

  • Posts: 0 Nola Scary Hair

Merely tapping into your military knowledge as to why you'd find it puzzling as to why another military would do things to reduce their own casualties. That's it. Nothing else implied.
