So if you’re going to believe what you want regardless of reporting why bother following the thread, just for confirmation bias?

You do realise there is actual history there? Hebrews were in the land etc?

Hey fun fact we all live around the world in different time zones

  • Registered Users Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Hey boy

You conveniently left out the kidnapping part first time around.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,994 ✭✭✭c.p.w.g.w

Yes I do know they were there many years ago. But the nation of Israel is promised to the Jews in the old testament...the Jewish people left that region...the whole claim of the nation of Israel is based on the old testament

I’m not believing anything, least of all anything posted by Hamas sympathisers. The truth will come out, it’s too soon to jump to conclusions. The Palestinian militants are well versed in waging PR war.

You'd want to take the blinkers off so... what Hamas did last week was evil.

What Israel is engaged in is deliberate and calculated genocide. They will lose their right to exist yet.

Normally the Onion just does a paragraph to sport a clickbait headline with a punchline baked in. Here they wrote a whole god damn (good) article:

”The past week has shown humanity at its worst: A horrific terrorist attack left at least 1,300 Israelis dead, among them peace activists and even innocent children. The fates of many more kidnapped civilians still lie in the balance. Meanwhile, statements from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggest retaliation against Palestinians in Gaza will be swift and merciless. More than 1,500 Gazans are already dead, and 338,000 others have been displaced. In moments of turmoil such as this, some believe it is the responsibility of a newspaper of record like The Onion to delve fully into the nuances of a complex and multifaceted conflict that stretches back not just decades but centuries. These people are wrong.”

Instead, this editorial board wishes to take this opportunity to declare its full and unequivocal support for Israel because, frankly, it seems like you get in way less trouble for that.

Let us be clear: This is a fraught moment, and one that has polarized not only Americans but people all over the world. It demands incredible sensitivity and strict adherence to journalistic standards of objectivity, and simply put, that is something we aren’t willing to do. Rather, we’re just going to say The Onion expresses its steadfast solidarity with Israel and leave it at that.

Why? First, because this editorial board doesn’t like getting yelled at. Second, there are going to be way fewer people with way less power mad at us. We don’t want to go up against the entire U.S. government, which through President Biden has expressed its unwavering support for Israel. Finally, and more importantly, it’s because we don’t want to and you can’t make us. You can’t. You seriously can’t. You cannot make us do all of this hard stuff. Ever. Seriously.

Furthermore, we should remember that unpacking this conflict in an adequately thorough manner would require examining it through a diverse range of lenses such as antisemitism, Islamic fundamentalism, the Holocaust, imperialism, contact theory, and many more, all while keeping in mind valid but competing narratives of victimhood that span hundreds of years. And we sure as hell aren’t going to mention apartheid. That sounds like an enormous headache. Even worse, our reward for that would be mobs of people screaming at us online. Why would we do that?

Alternatively, we could simply say, “Israel must be fully supported in its military campaign to root out evil in all of its hiding places.” That 19-word sentence would save us the trouble of engaging with this difficult situation. So we’re going to go with that one.

Does that make sense? We think it does.

Our stance becomes increasingly compelling when one considers some alternative scenarios. For instance, The Onion could theoretically say that it stands in solidarity with the bombing victims in Gaza. What would happen then? People would get mad at us. They could threaten our careers. How about if we said we believe the loss of innocent life is wrong no matter what the nationality? That would also result in people getting mad at us. Sometimes these would be different people getting mad, but that doesn’t really change things on our end. And most significantly, it could hurt our quarterly revenue, which is the worst tragedy imaginable.

For those reasons, and many more, we are not going to be endorsing any of those perspectives. Instead, the stance of standing unwaveringly with Israel, now and forever, seems to really be the sweet spot for those looking to avoid dealing with all of this ****.

“What of the tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians killed before this attack?” some may ask. Our response is simply that we aren’t going to engage with that because it would be too hard. We also won’t be addressing Palestinians living in refugee camps without access to clean water, electricity, or housing. Others may ask, “Isn’t it your responsibility to provide context, particularly on thorny issues such as this one?” To that, we merely say: No, shut up. You’re being annoying.

Perhaps some would call on us to point out the obvious moral hypocrisy of those far-left Americans who bandy about terms like “war criminal” while turning a blind eye to what amounts to an unconscionable war crime on the part of Hamas. But we are also not going to do that. Why? Because people will get angry with us—extremely irritating people, to be clear—and we just don’t want to deal with it. We have enough going on without them getting on our case. The water main broke in our office last Friday and dealing with the super has been a whole thing. He keeps avoiding our calls because obviously he’s going to have to eat the cost of the sump pump. There’s also a bunch of ad sales stuff that we’re negotiating with the business side. So why would we add defending ourselves against online criticism over one of the most incendiary topics in human history to the list of headaches we’re already dealing with? Why?

The answer is that we won’t

Some may call us cowards for our decision. To this, we can only say the following: If a coward is a person who avoids taking a difficult stance on topics for personal expediency, then “coward” is a badge this editorial board will gladly wear, again and again and again.

Any solutions will need to involve Israel giving up a large amount of their land and making huge concessions to the Palestinian people. If they want a peaceful state then they have a lot of work to do to make amends for the absolute shambles they kicked off 75 years ago. They'll need to make serious amends for what has unfolded ever since and they should do a lot more than they have done in the past if they want to hold on to some sort of a state where they can live in peace. But that's not going to happen is it. I don't think there ever will be a solution that works for the Palestinians.

I'm sick of listening to people saying the Palestinians should just leave and go to Egypt or wherever else. There was about 2% of the population in that region Jewish before the Zionists kicked off their push for a Jewish state.

Israel helped create Hamas. Netanyahu was happy to fund them to go up against the PLO. https://www.tbsnews.net/hamas-israel-war/how-israel-went-helping-create-hamas-bombing-it-718378

And since then Israel have retaliated against Hamas attacks with extreme force for long periods. Israel were warned Hamas was about to attack in large numbers before last weekend, and they chose to ignore the warnings for whatever reason and I wonder will we ever find out why there was such a poor response initially, there are many reports of IDF being moved in the days before the attack.

    Yolande Knell

    BBC Middle East correspondent, Jerusalem

British-Palestinian Dr Ghassan Abu Sittah has been updating BBC News on the deteriorating medical situation in the Gaza Strip this week.

He is now back at the Palestinian territory’s biggest hospital, Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

“Impending public health catastrophe at Shifa Hospital. Tens of thousands of internally displaced people are seeking refuge on the grounds, corridors, in the wards. Everywhere. Hundreds of patients with wounds who are in need of surgery are unable to get into the operating room. Huge back-log,” he writes on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In voice messages, he told colleagues in the UK: “We are no longer able to do anything but the most life-saving surgeries. Not only are the supplies been exhausted, but the staff have also been exhausted. A lot of them have either been killed or they have had family members killed, or they're trying to secure their families."

Another plastic surgeon whom he knew at Shifa Hospital, Dr Medhat Saidam is among those killed, reportedly along with many relatives in their home.

The doctor helped evacuate al-Awda Hospital in Jabalia in northern Gaza and says that Israeli evacuation orders were also given to other medical centres including Muhammad Al-Durrah Paediatric Hospital, which had a neo-natal intensive care unit.

It is just pure evil. These Israeli bombers are as bad as Hamas if not worse.

I don't know enough about explosive types, but I will tell you that that was a small explosion. Granted, that doesn't prove very much, Israel does sometimes use small bombs.

Good luck lads attacking a city of 2.5 million people, with narrow streets, mines everywhere and surrounded by high rise buildings. I bet they are chomping at the bit to get stuck in.

No blinkers, using words like genocide just destroys any argument you might have. They will not lose their right to exist, good that you can admit that they are in a fight for their very existence. Mistakes will happen in a war for existence.

I don't know what came over western leaders giving unequivocal support to Netanyahu this week. It should have been obvious to anyone he is an absolute **** and a wrong 'un.

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,387 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Your own 'source,' Twitter, X, cesspool that it is, doesn't say this definitely happened, says it was a "distinct possibility." But you proceed to declare it like a proven fact

You have one loose standard for yourself and everyone else needs a written press release from the white house. Laughable.

2% of the population means nothing without context. The entire population of that vast region in 1920 , from Rafah to Lebanon was -

    757,182 individuals

The first official census was taken in Palestine in 1922, by the British mandated government. In that occasion a total population of 757,182 individuals was found, of whom 590,390 were Muslims, 83,694 Jews, and 73,024 Christians.

To give context , there is almost 2.7 million living in the west bank. You get the picture that this territory was vastly unpopulated so the Jews who had been there since millennia had every right to get their own nation , which at the time were being handed out like hot cakes by the British empire.

The Muslim Brotherhood founded Hamas , not Israel.

So where back to these days in Germany again

  • Registered Users Posts: 429 ✭✭thereitisgone

You have some very fair points here that i do agree with

But the point is, we have to solve the problems with the world we have now

Looking back at the mistakes that were made, and there were many dosnt help

Everybody here is one side or that, but nobody here, myself included has come up with a long term solution that would really work

All this thread is about is blame

And we are looking at the here and now

I believe this current crisis is caused by Hamas using the Palestinians population as pawns

On the other side people look at the brutality of the Israelis on the Palestinians for years

Both sides i actually believe are right if you look at it in that context

But one example of how i seen how this whole thing has gone wrong is this

In 1998 i think Gaza had the Yasser Arafat airport, check out pictures

Gaza was a totally different place

Hamas came to power and now we have this

I am not in anyway excluding Israel from there contribution to this problem

But the two sides did co exist better before, not perfect in anyway but better

So i have no time for Hamas
