Irish/ UKpension query.

Hi.

I shall be eligible to claim my contributory pension next year, I will also be claiming a small amount of UK state pension, i have the appropriate form to fill for Irish pension, my query is, why will the pensions dept be applying for my UK pension on my behalf?

Yes-they will. But you have to give them your UK insurance number and details about times worked in the UK. They do the job for you if you do that.

That’s just a thing that they do in Sligo.

As far as I understand it, you can apply for a UK pension yourself and just apply for the Irish one. The main reason that you want to have Sligo apply for you to the UK is when you do not have enough contributions (10 years) for the UK to actually pay out a pension.

Note that you can currently make voluntary contributions to the UK to bring yourself to 10 years.

Is there a specific reason for it? wouldn't imagine they do it for a favour.

They are not doing do a favour, they are aggregating your contributions. This may or may not be to be to your advantage.

Thanks, so if i don't want Sligo to apply for my UK pension do i just leave blank the questions on the form asking for my nat ins number etc?

If you don't have enough contributions for a full irish pension you can make it up with your uk contributions and receive a full irish, however if you have enough irish contributions for a full irish you can also apply for the uk pension paid into an irish account. you have to declare it on a tax return every year and pay tax here if any due its basically treated as another income. Don't try and bluff anything with the department they already know all the answers and will catch you out very quickly

No bluff intended, i have enough contributions for full Irish pension, i was curious as to why Sligo would apply for my UK pension rather than myself.

I haven't seen the form (yet). I imagine if the question relates to the contributions that you are using to claim a pension and you are not using the UK contributions then you can leave it blank.

Note too that additional contributions in the UK is regarded as a good deal and a very good deal for some people, it has been discussed here and elsewhere.

It says so in the application form for the pension:

"If you have lived or worked in another country: We will apply for a pension on your behalf to those countries covered by EU Regulations or Bilateral Agreements."

Yes you can do that and apply for a uk pension yourself.

Sligo were doing it because if you were short PRSI contributions for an Irish pension then they’d use your NI contributions to make it up.

If you weren’t short PRSI contributions then you would still have triggered a UK pension application.

But if you want to do it yourself then ring UK International Pension Centre in Wolves and they’ll send you a form.
