When are RTÉ going to announce their new rights deal for the UEFA Champions League?

I don't know if RTÉ's payment scandal from last year has delayed them making an formal announcement on the rights.

Is it possible that they are going back to show Wednesday night games for this enhanced tournament?

So is it at the moment?:

Tuesday 1st choice: Premier & Amazon

All other Tuesday games: Virgin Media & TNT

Wednesday 1st choice: RTE & TNT and Premier (although could RTE and Premier show the same match?)

All other Wednesday games: VM & TNT

Europa League and Europa Conference League seems exclusive to Premier and TNT

well, obviously Premier and RTE can’t both have first choice on a Wednesday, but right now it’s actually unclear if RTE have anything at all as the only source is second hand (The 42).

Pretty certain LiveScore are out though. I wouldn’t read anything into the Saran Media reference in that regard.

The broadcasting rights for the UEFA Champions, Europa, and Conference League from 2024-27 being split among Premier, VMTV, and RTE is going to make access to these competitions more diverse.

MOD Edit: don’t try that again or it’s a ban.

With no official announcement re renewal could tonight be the end of RTE’s coverage of the Champions League? Maybe there’ll be some sort of indication as to whether it’s the end during the coverage.

I thought this announced that RTE had the rights? Don't have subscription, so not sure what's in the rest of the article.

The issue with that report is that it’s not consistent with Premier’s own announcement that they have first pick on Wednesday and there’s been no confirmation from UEFA of RTE picking up rights.

UEFA Champions League TV rights document dated 3rd June. Premier Sports and Saran Media for the RoI. No mention of RTE, unless they do a sub-letting arrangement of some sort?

For the Europa League and Conference League (doc also dated 3rd June), just Saran Media listed for the RoI.

Look, at this stage I’m gonna take RTE out of the thread title, Saran Media are a rights broker but I think it’s clear in this instance it’s VMTV they acted for and it’s not actually clear RTE have any rights, other than one article that’s not corroborated anywhere else.

If mid August comes and RTE do start showing games we can reinsert them then but it’s six weeks or so away now and there’s been no announcement from them of having secured any rights and they are not listed in Uefa’s list.

First game of the deal now not that far away - Real Madrid v Atlanta in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday week on Premier 1.

Hopefully at that stage who has what will start to become clearer.

It's on RTE2 as well. Guess that clears up that they have some sort of CL rights this season

Where did you get the info that RTÉ were showing The UEFA Super Cup this year?

    I can't find it anywhere.

Seen it as well on Digiguide listed on RTE2 start time of 7.30pm

Just a small update so the following weeks listings show champions league on VMTV2 on the Tuesday and on RTE 2 on Wednesday 21st August

BBC One NI will have highlights of the UEFA Super Cup at 11:40pm on Wednesday the 14th of August. Other versions of BBC One will have it on a little bit earlier. It's not a long highlights programme though. It's last for about 40 minutes.

Virgin Media 2 now down to show a match on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

RTE 2 down for Wednesday night.

Don't see anything yet for Premier Sports 1 & 2 yet.

Looking at the potential games, there's isn't that much exciting games that they could choose from. A hope that maybe Rangers make it through?

The argument for the Play Off Round to remain centrally contracted gets weaker and weaker.

Presume actual picks will only be confirmed once this weeks second leg third round ties are complete.

BBC to show CL highlights on Wednesday nights, for the next 3 years

The UEFA website was saying that VMTV were showing highlights of the UEFA Super Cup in Ireland.

Obviously that information is misleading because VMTV don't have highlights of this match for Irish viewers.

If you miss out on the live coverage of this match. It will be on BBC One later tonight.

Play off round ties for both VMTV and RTE are confirmed, VMTV have Bodo/Glimt v Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday and RTE have Young Boys of Bern v Galatasaray on Wednesday.

Nothing for Premier in the schedule although they do have the UCL logo on their website.

With official confirmation (thanks, Darragh Maloney!) that RTE are showing this years competition I’ll reinstate them to the thread title. It’s mad though that six days out from the centrally contracted phase of the tournament we still don’t know fully the shape of what coverage will look like.

Those were chosen suspiciously very quickly alright last night.

    Tuesday:

    VM2, TNT1: Bodo/Glimt v Red Star Belgrade.

    TNT2: Dinamo Zagreb v Qarabag

Amazon/Premier: Lille v Slavia Prague (not confirmed)

    Wednesday: RTE2, TNT1: Young Boys v Galatasaray

    VM2, TNT3: Dynamo Kiev v Salzburg

    TNT2: Malmo v Sparta Prague

TNT4: FC Midtjylland v Slovan Bratislava

    Premier: (not confirmed)

So, here’s some more info on Premiers website:

    The main points are:

    • first choice on Tuesday
    • Coverage on Wednesday (does this mean RTE picked up the first choice on Wednesday? What pick is Premier - before or after VMTV?)
    • Rights to the final

They also have rights (not described as exclusive) to the Europa and Conference League. Quite clearly at the moment though they only have capacity to broadcast one game in each of the two windows though.

Now Premier still don’t have a game in the schedule for either Tuesday or Wednesday night. We also have heard nothing at this late stage about Amazon showing a game on Tuesday night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,027 ✭✭✭iseegirls

Apart from the Tuesday night game that Premier Sports have (which Amazon will have), I still don't see the benefit of them having any of the rest of the games - and that's including what games they have in the Europa League and Conference League - especially when all those games will be on the exact same subscription package alongside TNT Sports.

It may pay off if Shamrock Rovers or St Patricks get through.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,799 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I think VMTV when they had the Europa League regarded it as a curse rather than a blessing if an Irish team got through - I dont think it brought significant additional viewers (particularly if Manchester United were playing in the same window) and they were saddled with the costs of host broadcaster duties for home games, and we all know their views on having to do host broadcaster duties!

But you make a fair point. It’s a curious rights acquisition for Premier because it won’t in principle give them a single extra subscriber and saddles them with potential host broadcaster duties. There’s no guarantee for them that Amazon will pick the same first choice game on a Tuesday - which would effectively give them a measure of exclusivity over the fixture, at least among non Prime Video customers - although in some cases it will probably be obvious what the top pick on particular night will be.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,799 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

And indeed, Premier will have to do host broadcaster duties for the league phase as Shamrock Rovers have qualified for the Europa League play off round with a drop down to the league phase of the Conference League if they lose.

Also possiblity that St Patrick’s Athletic, who have qualified for the Conference League play off round might make it to the league phase.

So Premier’s picks are now in:

    Tuesday: Lille v Slavia Prague

Wednesday: Young Boys of Bern v Galtasaray

Interestingly, the Wednesday game is the same as RTE. Does this somehow tell us RTE and Premier will have the same games on Wednesdays, or just pure coincidence?

to add: Amazon have also gone for Lille v Slavia Prague, and will show Galatasaray v Young Boys of Bern the following week.

I'm still baffled by the logic Premier use when buying for example the Amazon rights for Tuesday first pick. I doubt it will drive any subscriptions to them or very few to merit the outlay. Maybe they know the logic. There are other rights that baffle me they go for but i wont go into them on this thread.
