Stove top seems to short.. service or replace?

We have an electrical glass stove top like one of these

today when I turn on the fuse switch on the wall to turn it on:

    • one of the rings flashes for a split second (even though the cooker isn't switched on)
    • the fuse switch snaps to off
    • the switch at the mains fuse box for the cooker switches off too

Does this mean that a fuse needs to be replaced, or is there a short somewhere in the cooker?

Do I need to replace the cooker? Is this something a standard electrician can fix, or do I need to call a specialist from the cooker manufacturer?

Sounds like a fault anyway , is there a warranty

What do you mean by the fuse switch snaps to off

If ring is coming on with the switches off on the unit itself, it's faulty.

If not under warranty, it probably just as cheap to replace with new. There should be no special electrical work for a direct replacement unit.

it's one of those "fitted" units where it's embedded into the kitchen wood so hopefully it's easy enough to remove and to get one with the exact same dimensions...

No chance it's under warranty as it came with the house when I bought it 10 years ago.

there's a switch on the kitchen wall that you turn on.. with a red light on it.. seems to be a secondary fuse switch

There should be no issue there. It will be held down with some clips from underneath.

Measure size of existing one and go shopping.

Get Electrician to do the swap. Typically 3 screw terminals to make the connection.

grand.. I think the wall switch is the alternative when the cooker isn't plugged into a socket but instead wired into the wall, so not sure what it's called

btw are the hobs sold separately to the cooker underneath?

I checked Currys and they seem to sell hobs or cookers, not both combined.

    This is a hob

    This is an oven

    This is a cooker

This is a hob installed above an oven

    This is a 2 gang cooker switch/isolator:

This is a fused spur/fused connection unit:

    This is an RCD spur:

Can you clarify what cooking appliance you have and what switch you have

Also in your fuse box - the switch that trips when you try to use the cooking appliance - does it have a test button? can you tell us what writing appears on it

"the fuse switch snaps to off"

I presume that ^^ means isolator light goes out

    And likely an MCB trip

that line was what made me include the rcd spur but a neon going out seems more likely

hmm 1 gang and 2 gang isolators look the same to me?

Based on the pics I have a "hob installed above an oven"

The switch is one of the "gang" ones I guess?

    Looks similar to this

And yep, the isolator goes out.. but prior to that one of the rings on the hob flashes for a second, despite the hob not being turned on

The 1 gang switch is a square. The 2 gang is rectangle.

If you have hob over separate oven, you will likely just have to pull out the oven to access holding down clips.

That should just be 4 screws to get oven out.

There is no issue buying hob by itself.

I'm guessing you are not Irish!

Nah, just never had to buy my own hob before 🤣

I got a quote from the manufacturer for €225 for repairing it, incl labour and VAT, with 90 day guarantee.

Think that might be a good first option considering getting a new one would prob be €500 including the electrician costs?

It will also let me see how it's installed so I'll know what to buy if I do decide to change it

I would say upgrade hob most likely

225 to get your old hob back isn't great economics unless it's worth big money when it's fixed
