Medical Card Entitlement in a Family

Is it the case that if the parents in a family have a medical card the children also qualify by default? Or are they treated separately?

I would have thought so unless the child as a specific illness of which treatment would be costly.

It's a complicated situation, the child's card was rescinded at 16 birthday but parents has auto-renewed twice since.

Looks like they were separate entitlements with the parents being a discretionary card.

Edit: or else they have made a mistake in not cancelling the parents card.

I have a discretionary card that auto-renews, my adult(19) son was switched to GP visit card at his last renewal.

So I'd tend to agree with you that it may have been separate entitlements. It might be worthwhile for the child to at least check out whether the child qualifies in their own right for a card?

Do some pen & paper calculation using the info from below and at the very least a continuing entitlement to a GP visit card may still exist?
