Mod requiring separate licence?

Spoke to my local sergeant today regarding first rifle licence (243), he mentioned that he was going to check did a mod require a separate licence. News to me if there's been a recent change in the legislation, I've ticked the silencer and listed the required info for the moderator.

I'm 99% sure he's mistaken but want to be fully sure if I need to challenge hi on this.

The only time a moderator would need a separate licence or authorisation would be if you had one without a moderator applied for on a firearms certificate.

As you can imagine, an edge case.

Otherwise, even with recent changes which heavily affect licencing night vision & thermal sights, it is just a box ticked as part of your application for the firearm, in this case the 243 rifle.

Adding a mod makes no difference to unrestricted or restricted. You still need the S on your cert though...

Not anymore. But there was window or about 18-months where that was restricted.

Was resolved when the rimfire rifle non-restriction was expanded to include all rifles.

When was that legislation in force ?

I've had several mods on various calibre rifles for 30 years and once they were all under 7.62 and not SACF, they were unrestricted. It was simply a matter of ticking the box on the application form in order to get the mod approved. It made no impact to the application category, unrestricted or restricted.

Are you confusing this with the thermal imaging scope issue ?

SI 21/2008 made suppressors for anything other than rimfire, a restricted firearm. This was signed into law in February 2008.

SI 337/2009 amended SI 21/2008, specifically section 5 of SI 337/2009 which states:

5. Article 4(2) of the Principal Order is amended—

in subparagraph (d) by the deletion of the word “rim-fire”, and

Which means SI 21/2008 now reads:

silencers capable of being used only with long rifled firearms

SI 337/2009 was signed into law in August of 2009 so technically between Feb of 2008 and August of 2009 suppressors were restricted for anything other than rimfire. So about 18 months.

The license for the firearm is restricted so even if a suppressor for one were restricted (as it's not a long rifled firearm) you have the appropriate license and the authorisation for the suppressor would be attached to your restricted license.

Opinion only as I know no one with a suppressor on a restricted shotgun.

im curious as I’ve never seen a silencer on a shotgun here either. Wondering if anyone else has? Salvo 12 looks to be the main manufacturer but don’t know if they have any sold in Europe

Nope. Wasn’t confused 😉. As I mentioned was only a short window, and wasn’t widely enforced afaik. But many were not aware of a potential issue they had.

Seen a couple of them on different shotguns.From a maverick pump action unrestricted 3 shot 410.To a Turkish semi-automatic shotgun[restricted] with an over barrel,or chopped and permanently mated 24-in silencer. [Think the gun used by the hitman character Chigurh[ Javier Bardem] in the film "No Country for Old Men " The thing had all the handling characteristics of a 20-foot scaffold pole, when I tried it.

Salvo 12 is made by a US company SilencerCo, and is very unlikely to be exportable from the USA, as it is a National Firearms Act[NFA] item.

Gents I stand corrected so my apologies and thanks for digging up the reference.

I checked my records and I subbed my 6.5 and my mod in late 2007 for an evil SACF so that's why I must have missed this twist at the time. Did not get another mod for a couple of years.

Kinda brings me back to a point I've made several times before that it would be helpful if someone in the PTB wrote to licence holders about any changes that might knock them offside. Not everyone has a subscription to Irish Legal Weekly or whatever.

Maybe just those that had mods around 2008 received a notice and that's why I did not hear about it. It's a while back of course but I don't remember anyone I knew at the time that was talking about having to go restricted with their renewals because of having a mod.
