does anyone know if Cathay will ever resume its service to HKG? Also any updates on the DUB - TLV route, is it temporarily gone or is it gone for good?

"…will Cathay ever resume its service to HKG?… "

How on earth do you expect anyone to be able to answer a question “gone for good ?” ?

It’s gone for the short and medium term whether it’s gone “for good” as in forever and never ever ever coming back cannot be answered.

The winter ACL report for Dublin does not make pretty reading for new routes, frequency increases, and even has a reduction in slots for the likes of Aer Lingus, Ryanair, and Delta to name but a few, when compared with winter 2023.

No slots for Norwegian, Pegasus, jetBlue or Hainan either… they're making it very hard for the airlines. Hainan have expressed their great interest in flying to Dublin more and expanding the route to Beijing multiple times, plus being our only far east route you'd think it would see some priority for more connection over others.

Just 82% of over 100,000 movement requests ( for all carriers) were allocated. Not ideal by any means! How that cap is still in place is beyond me when it’s leading to the likes of the above.

It is mired in the planning process and will only be changed if Fingal CC so decide, most likely as part of a decision on DAA planning application/s. Wishing it away won't work! 😐️

fully aware that not all of the 18% of rejected requests would have resulted in actual routes or frequency increases this winter but can we, for a country of our size really afford to be rejecting 18 % of slot requests off the bat and leave the responsibility to the local council (Fingal County Council)?

Surely there’s now grounds to challenge the above to the courts particularly for the airlines not granted the same amount of slots as previous years, and for the airlines not allowed in at all for W24 such as JetBlue and Hainan, as the previous poster pointed out, Ireland only direct route to the far east has now been blocked unnecessarily.

JetBlue was just a summer route anyway and I don’t think Norwegian have operated in the winter since they closed down NAI…. It’s a big shame if Hainan are considering operating through the winter but can’t get slots

In essence it’s winter 2023 on repeat and will be till the cap goes. Much like Heathrow you hold what you have.

So people really shouldn’t be surprised that we haven’t got any new airlines and only a few new routes, at the cost of underperforming routes. If you are still surprised by the lack of new airlines etc then you don’t understand the system very well.

I don’t think anyone has lost any slots and if they have it’ll likely be at the expense of what that airline did during the summer, as in selling huge numbers of seats. My reading of it was Aer Lingus and Ryanair requested more slots but were denied them. As were every other pax airlines only cargo got extras.

While many airlines requested an increase in slots, none got them only the cargo airlines. That was always going to be a given really like you say.

    However, if you look at historical slots vs those allocated for W2024, there are quite a few airlines which have lost historic slots vs 2024, look at Aerlingus as an example. I have then noted some of the lost historic slots for other airlines also many of whom have applied for an increase also;

Aerlingus historic slots - 22,100, lost slots 1,065, reclaimed slots 21,035. Actual slots requested for W 2024 24,752.

    Air Baltic, lost slots 88

    British airways, lost slots 18

    Emerald airlines lost slots 323

    Hi Sky, lost slots 197

    Play, lost slots 44

    Ryanair, lost slots 2,124

    Sas, lost slots 146

    Swiss, lost slots 22

    TUI, lost slots 33

Again, this is just a breakdown of airlines whom have lost historic slots vs what was given in W2024, all information taken from the ACL report.

Many airlines, including those mentioned above and a lot more, applied for a much greater amount and around 17,000 were denied including ~ 4000 historic slots.

If my interpretation of the above is wrong, please enlighten me.

JetBlue said previously that they wanted to go year round and they clearly do as they applied for the slots. Not surprising as the new routes to Dublin are doing well for them.

I'm certain Hainan had the flights for winter on sale though and it was announced some weeks ago that the route was to go year round, so unsure what will happen next.

Still can't get over how a county council is allowed to tamper with the operation of the national airport...for an island nation. It just would not happen in Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, Greece etc.

It's the type of management you get more in countries that are relative superpowers with multiple major hub airports.

Is the material that people are quoting in the public domain? If so, a link would be appreciated.

Would help if we had a decent Minister of Transport.

Are you referring to the ACL report? If so, yes.

It seems to be even worse than that. I think the figures you quoted are just the lost historic slots. If you go to page 5 you can see a column "unallocated movements". This page is more reflective of the demand versus granted.

Using Ryanair as an example, they had applied for 38,746 slots and were granted 33,174 so a deficit of 5,572 slots. Swiss applied for 1,036 but were only granted 590… and on..and on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,293 ✭✭✭bikeman1

My God that is bad. 5,000 flights at 180 per flight on FR = 900,000 less pax alone this winter with Ryanair. That alone will have a massive impact on the airport, the businesses trying to operate there and to and from the airport and of course us the pax who will have less choice and more money to pay to get off our island.

    Crazy stuff altogether.

They're on sale already or available on their schedule page, surely this will become more vocal now as routes or increases in existing services are denied and the option of Cork/Shannon won't work

Do airlines traditionally start selling flights at slot controlled airports before actual grant of said slot or is there a misunderstanding going on here?

  • Registered Users Posts: 248 ✭✭davebuck

Just tried to book a flight with Hainan to Beijing 5th Nov to 16th Nov direct flights available! not sure what the slots denied means now?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,852 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

Should we shut down cap numbers going to all stores alomg the m50, because of the congestion they cause ? No? Funny that... literally the reason im long finished with voting , all of the gobshytes suppport this madness...

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,852 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

This saga will run for devades in this banana republic, the airport could be served by heavy rail and metro and those morons will still want cap...

  • Registered Users Posts: 341 ✭✭IQO

What new flights are they referring to here? THY to Istanbul is operating for at least 10 years now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,950 ✭✭✭EchoIndia

Pegasus are commencing Istanbul (Sabiha Gökçen)-Dublin flights on 3 July, so maybe it is a very mixed-up response by Turkish and the DAA. 🤔

  • Registered Users Posts: 58 ✭✭FR738

it’s Ankara that Pegasus are launching but there seems to be connections available to SAW so maybe that’s it?

How's the load on the Hainan Airlines flight going? See that it's running 5 days a week on the outbound journey!

On a related note, has anybody flown on connected through Beijing?

Curious about this too especially since China has waved visas for Irish people. I went years ago when you needed a visa and you had to go to the Chinese embassy with all the documents. It was a pain
