when I did my driving test 20 years ago it was a years waiting list. Passed first time and was told before the test the tester usually knows quick enough if you pass or not. If you’re back quickly it’s either a pass or fail. The longer you’re out its boarder line.

Maybe people who lost their license due to penalty points need to resit the test again to get it back.

In the 80s all Drivers with their 2nd provisional were given Full licences there was no marked increase in accidents etc. Involving this group. I have no reason to think it would be any different today.

Only in Ireland would we think driving a potentially lethal vehicle unlicensed is a good idea. We've for a very strange car culture here

I used to encounter those people all the time and they were a danger to be round. They did not know basic driver eticet and behaved in ways which were not normal. Frequently I had to take corrective measures to avoid them.

It's the typical " ah sure he'll be grand, he's only driving 3 weeks but sure he's fine" attitude.

Ah sure them lessons are only a joke, your father is driving the last 50 year and not a bother to him.

Show me where the statistics were collated? I don’t believe, given the handwritten fold up licences at the time and the lack of tracking, that there are any such statistics.

it was 1979, not the '80s.

I did 2 tests on the same day in 1987, in 2 different categories, one after the other, with the same tester.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

At the end of the day driving is one of the easiest tasks you will ever learn to do.

Its the following the rules of the road and the care and attention part that some people dont seem to be able to do. No amount of lessons is going to fix that.
