I want to purchase a smartphone from Vodafone for an older family member. They don't have a SIM card to fit a smartphone. They also want to keep their existing phone number. Does ordering a new SIM online through Vodafone mean they get a new number?

Eh, no. Full mobile number portability has been a thing for years. They can keep their own number.

They should be able to cut the SIM down to fit into the new phone, I’d ask them nicely in one of the shops. Saves the hassle of activating a new SIM.

If they can’t do that, then get a new SIM an port the number over. You can usually set a time to start the port at, and after a few hours it’s done.

If they are not already a Vodafone customer you can can port their number to Vodafone. Sims these days generally come 3 in 1. You select the size you need from the 1 sim card.
