it used to be that it wasn’t poss For anyone in the gay community to give blood! Not sure if it’s changed. But wonder if people here still do anyway!

Donation rules were overhauled a few times over the last couple of years, most recently in November 2022.

There are no longer separate restrictions for men who have sex with men, the donation eligibility criteria apply to everyone.

    Quotes:

You must NOT donate for at least 4 months after:

    • You had a new sexual partner** and had anal sex
    • You had sex with more than one partner and had anal sex

**A new sexual partner is someone you have not had sex with before or a person with whom you resumed a previous sexual relationship in the past 4 months.

What will the changes mean for gbMSM?

The changes will mean that men who have oral sex with other men, but do not engage in anal sex will be eligible to donate without a deferral period (subject to other eligibility criteria). The changes will also mean that gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men who are in a monogamous relationship for 4 months or more will be eligible to donate blood, even if they are having anal sex, as will their partners.
