Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

EGR - Intermittent Engine Light

Recently bought 2020 Ford Focus 1.5 tdci. Under 60k km on clock. Engine light came on, returned to dealer who changed the EGR, hours later light back on. Back to dealer who said there were to EGRs and he changed second one. 2 days later light back on so brought it to Ford. They said it was lambda sensor and that was changed. Roll on a week later light back on.

Before I return to dealer or Ford anyone any ideas as to why intermittent EGR faults are happening

They are obviously failing to diagnose the problem correctly

It sounds like they are throwing parts at the problem hoping it will go away.

I wouldn't describe it as intermittent. Seems a solid fault to me. They change a (random) part, clear the fault code(s) and a few days later the engine management light comes on again, because they haven't diagnosed or fixed the fault.

Did they say what fault codes they read from the car? It sounds like they need to have a qualified mechanic properly diagnose the problem and fix it.

The garage I got it from said the codes were related to the EGR..lost patience with back and forth with them and they agreed to let Ford deal with it which was fairly sound of them.

Ford had it a few hours and changed the lambda sensor which I wouldve assumed their more advanced equipment would have pointed the fault being.

Ive the car 4 weeks..it has a 6mth warranty but its a pain the whole back n forth.

Getting a friend to plug in a diagnostic machine tomorrow to get codes

Don’t tell them about your friend plugging in as it can void your warranty

I'm not saying anything. Spoke with dealer who said bring it back to Ford.

Im just curious as to what the fault is as the egr and sensor being replaced you'd imagine there isnt much else

What are the symptoms? Is the car just going into limp mode randomly, or warning light just appearing?

    Two EGR valves sounds unusual

Interesting, have only ever seen one on my cars when removing to clean/blank. You learn something new everyday!

Just the light appears. Performance isnt affected.

Its going back to Ford next week. Guy in Ford said it is a software issue as to why the light came back on after sensor replaced

The engine management light coming on just indicates that the electronic control unit has detected a fault condition. It could be anything.

The fault codes stored in the ECU will help diagnose the fault but do not replace the knowledge and experience needed to intelligently interpret the fault codes and apply proper diagnostic procedures to find and fix the root cause.

    Update:

Car was back with Ford today. Computer was showing 6 faults. Guy said, and excuse the very simple description, the filter was blocked with cabon resulting in the car thinking there were 6 faults. Filter/mesh replaced and a forced regen done on DPF.

The previous work of replacing egr valves and sensor werent required.

Fingers crossed thats the end of that issue

Ford definitely would have more advanced equipment but mechanics pay is rubbish so there is a shortage of good lads. Too many have left .

The scenario that op is dealing with is the consequence.

Just as well the OP isn't paying for it outside of the hassle for it. Twould be a fair bill to pay for all that. In fairness tis costing the dealer plenty as well no doubt.

Why are there so many poor mechanics out there? Is it just pay or is it something else at play?

The above experience is far from unique as many would attest to.
