Strong gusts and rain still occurring in D12, calmed down from 6am when it was pretty fierce.

Bin day today, plenty of wheelies and rubbish tossed around.

South Kildare, just up, blustery out there but nothing out of the ordinary. Texted the boss and we're all in. Fair enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

Seems quiet enough here in blanchardstown, dog is lying beside me snoring so that's always a good sign. Wheelie bins are all out on the road for bin day so fingers crossed they stay standing!

Same - Also costal South Dublin. People just seem to be obsessed with saying it was a none event. It’s grim here this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,016 ✭✭✭adocholiday

If the observations are anything to go by then it was no more than yellow for the vast majority and a single orange level gust was recorded at Knock. I know we're still technically in the middle of it but the gusts have weakened since. A lot of posts about how bad it was are coming from places that don't usually get strong winds. Nothing particularly noticeable about it from the reporting stations though.

You may want to read them yourself there boss….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭Condor24

Lads, yellow warnings would have sufficed for this, maybe orange in some coastal counties. Otherwise this was a damp squid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,074 ✭✭✭redsteveireland

More damage around Galway than I have seen from previous storms, trees down , flooding. Sea wall collapsed in Maree.

Longford here. Was extremely windy here when I woke at around 5.30 and you could hear the gusts buffeting the house. Its quitenend down alot now though aside from occasional gusts, not much rain with it.

Crazy that Dublin bus and the Luas aren't operating even at reduced capacity.

    Free Palestine 🇵🇸

  • It's wild here in D4 last 30 minutes or so. Top floor apartment. The sliding doors are getting a direct hit and the trees below swaying wildly. Stuff getting tossed around outside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,503 ✭✭✭secman

We don't have dog, so we feel we cannot contribute to this discussion, we have wheelie bins though. Anyway it's a bit wet and windy here in D24 nothing extraordinary though.

It’s an unplesasant day but hardly merits a red warning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Ah don't tell me the squids got damp?!

Possibly but 50k plus with no electricity so must have been rough in some areas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,040 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    And there you have it.

    Ne'er the twain shall meet.

(Won't somebody think of the squid?)

Just drive through Dublin City to work. Loads of cars despite red warning as expected.

bin trucks out avd as they empty each bin and put it back it heads off down the road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭torres9kop

Madness in D4. Stay safe everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,512 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

I'm in the Midlands. My front garden is a swimming pool. The electricity is gone at work and there's trees and branches down everywhere.

And despite all that, not a squid in sight !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,040 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

The bins around here (D4) got emptied before 6, mine is in but of the others left out there are more flying around the road on their sides than not. I'm just waiting for one to clatter off a car.

Depends where in Cork, Well justified around me, coastal, both rain and wind. A series of tress down locally, localised flooding etc. So in my neck of the woods Orange was justified.

I would also imagine there had to be a mindset that we already had saturated lands and therefore trees falling were a heightened risk with the wind forecast. Not everywhere is urban with small hedges and young/small trees!

Extremely strong winds and rain at 5 am till around 5:40 in Westmeath last night. Heard too many cracking and crreaking noises from the attic for comfort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 658 ✭✭✭ngunners

Is a damp squid better or worse than a damp squib?

To the people saying it should have been yellow instead of orange, or orange instead of red: I’d rather be safe than sorry. If Met Eireann don’t err on the side of caution and people die then those same posters would be saying what a disgrace it was that people weren’t warned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,480 ✭✭✭Kamili

I think the only damp "squids" are those that don't know the difference between a squid and a squib. Squids are meant to be damp anyway.

Got woken up at 5am feeling like the window was going to blow in. Surprised the power didn't go! It steadily got worse between 5.45am and about 6.20am or so. Dog came up on the bed for cuddles.

Calmed down considerably now. So doggo back on the floor snoring away.

    North Kildare

Indeed. Met Eireann can never win! It was only couple of weeks ago some posters in here were 'crying' about a lack of a red warning for rain in Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,384 ✭✭✭highdef

A few seconds from the sitting room in my house in longford earlier. Was the first time I've ever been scared of a storm.

And another few seconds recording out a slightly open window. Nothing to see as the power was (and still is) out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,027 ✭✭✭✭titan18

I'm in Cork City and it wasn't too bad. There was a decent bit of rain but wind only really picked up for a very short period. When I compare this to what we got last month, it wasn't bad at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,573 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

100000 properties with power out. they've just read out a list of roads closed by trees down on the news

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,883 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Didn’t ME not get slated a few weeks ago for not giving a strong enough warning for a previous storm?

dammed if they do and dammed if they don’t it seems…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Err have you looked at the facts around rainfall and extreme temperatures and weather events recently, what are you putting that down to? Gods will? The natural end of days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,224 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

I got up at 6 to let the dog in from the back garden....thing looked terrified and sprinted into the kitchen. Is now hiding under the table. Must have been rough enough out there last night.

seemed to fairly windy for a bit around 5am in north cork but not bad. Grand morning now, clear and a bit breezy. good to escape it to be honest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,195 ✭✭✭padyjoe

Windy, the sun is up, blue sky with dirty clouds ahead, full blackout behind, on the way down to Waterford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,636 ✭✭✭celt262

Tress and power lines down through out Cavan so definitely not a damp squid around here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Patsy167

Absolutely fine here in Dublin city centre. I expect the retailers will be fuming with Met Eireann.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭Condor24

I was believing this would be another Darwin, but it really wasn't. It did meet storm criteria, but not red levels I'll argue. There are flaws in the warning system, but I doubt it's going anywhere soon.

If people are finding damp squids away from the coast then I would suggest it has been quite a storm!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,769 ✭✭✭Pinch Flat

Won't someone think of the squids

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,071 ✭✭✭10-10-20

Still blasting in South Dub, wouldnt like to be driving any type of large vehicle over an exposed M50 bridge. Many trees still in leaf and still retaining them unusually too.

Yep, how come the planes can take off at Dublin Airport if its a red warning but no bus or Luas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,040 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

What sort of a question is that?

There's a good deal less potential debris likely to clutter up a runway, compared to the trees/branches/bins/etc/etc that may wind up in the path of a luas or bus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,443 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Finner and casement highest gusts at 8am 100km/h

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,189 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

In fairness to ME. They issued a short 4 hour rolling (time and county) red warning for a storm that appears to have left every area in its path without electricity. They did exactly what they were supposed to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭circadian

Yeah but MY house wasn't directly affected so they were wrong.

You can see who did get most affected.

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

Up to 110,000 customers without power at peak according to ESB.

  • A couple of storms back a heap of very large old trees came down around Anglesea Rd, Merrion Rd and over around Ranelagh. That was an overnight storm. That's why the buses are probably cancelled - the risk of something similar happening at school/morning rush hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,480 ✭✭✭Kamili

Can you not just pull it back up? Be grand!! It's only a damp squid.

All joking aside though, I hope everyone in the house is safe and there's minimal damage. My heart goes out to people facing into things like this after any storm given the current cost of living crisis.
