Trade in Honda Jazz or sell privately

Planning on buying a new Suzuki Vitara (mild hybrid)or a Toyota Yaris Cross ( full hybrid)in January 2024.

Trade-in offers on my Honda Jazz 2017 range from €9500 to €11600 depending on the salesperson and dealership.

The Honda is an excellent car, in perfect condition.Any opinions on selling privately.Would it be worth the hassle ?Also I would appreciate any feedback on Suzuki Vitara versus Yaris Cross.

Where are you getting €17,000 out of?

He has a 2017 car and is being offered between 9k to 12k trade in by dealers, he is wondering should he try asking 14k for it privately

All I know is they retail for a fair bit more than you’re being offered if you look online but naturally trade and retail prices are different things

You can filter them easily enough. They’re badged Fit as jap imports and it’s fairly obvious to look at them

Did you look at the New jazz? Crazy expensive but a very nice package. Ive never liked Suzuki fit and finish - find it cheap and low rent but latest models might be better finished but they’re cheaper to buy than Honda of course

Yaris cross is a lot newer model. Is more desirable and will hold its value better. But likely more equipment on the Vitara and slightly bigger I’d think too for the money.

I'd take the 'mild hybrid' and even 'hybrid' terms they use with a pinch of salt. Savings over similar petrol powered cars will be minimal. Ultimately, you're looking at petrol powered cars here so you might get more of a response in the Motors forum.

I would expect diesel economy from a hybrid, without dpf or injector problems, ideally suited to short journeys, even the longer trips still better economy than just a petrol engine.

OP advertise your car as "Irish" see if you get any bites.

I would prefer the cheaper car, so Japanese would not bother me, others have different views and would prefer the more expensive Irish model.

Thanks for the replies and useful information. I guess the Toyota Yaris Cross, being a newer model and a hybrid with a 10-year guarantee ,would be in the way to go.

I am going to advertise the Honda Jazz 2017 and see what level of interest there is in it. Any suggestions as to what price I should advertise it at. It's in excellent condition and very well equipped tech wise .

Most of the ads I've seen are Honda Fit imports and one of the Toyota Car Dealers said there were issues about getting insurance for them ,not sure what he meant by that.Trade in is almost €12000 so was thinking around €14000 perhaps.

Honda dealers not selling many new cars these days , some Honda dealers are also selling Suzuki also .

where are you based ?

as Honda dealers are often small outlets , you could also see if your local dealer will source a new Suzuki or Toyota and give a good trade in on an irish Jazz

Thanks for the suggestions, I will have a look at that, might be a way forward. New Honda's have become very expensive and are also in very short supply it would seem. Production and delivery problems. Really only two dealers left in Dublin now .

Believe it or not there are actually several 7 year old Honda Fits advertised in and around €17,000😂

But OP will not get that for their car. They haven’t said if its automatic or manual. Assuming its Auto, they might get close to €10,000 as a private sale. Dealers are selling them for as little as €11,000. If its manual then it will probably be less again.

Having often searched boards.ie for information and opinions it's useful when there's a conclusion to the post.With that in mind and as a courtesy to all who contributed I would like to let you know that we put a deposit on a new Honda jazz ES version in Milano red .17000 Euro with a scrappage deal on my old 98 Ford Escort Ghia Estate.(Must be the last one still running)

Bought it in Cranley Cars ,descent bunch.

Thanks for your reply.The Honda Jazz I bought six years ago is now almost doubled in price surely that must affect the trade in or resale value of second-hand car.

If a Honda salesperson offers 12,000 trade in then the car must be worth a bit more than that privately. I'm no expert. so I could be mistaken.

Yes you are mistaken , no way you will get anywhere near 14k selling privately. Car will be 7 years old in a couple of weeks , you bought it 7 years ago for 17k ,it will be sold with no warranty , as someone mentioned above you would be lucky to get 10k , trade it in for 12k only a loss of 5k over 7 years what a result .

Thanks for the information and suggestions.Perhaps a trade in is the best route all things considered,it's certainly the simplest.To be honest I only take an interest in cars when I'm buying one, hence the need for advice.Most dealerships now give very little reduction for cash so I would need to sell it for more than the trade in value to make it worth the bother.

On the positive side ,as you mentioned, 5 grand less than I paid for it new,is a good return. Unfortunately they have all nearly doubled in price.Soon the only people buying new will be either PCP addicts or company car perks.

Quite the opposite in fact. They probably over valued your car to make it seem like your getting a good deal. You must be paying full asking price for the car your buying? Like I said above, dealers are selling 2017’s for as little as €11k. So private value is under €10k.

Thanks for the information. I guess I was a bit wide of the mark expecting €14000. As some others have mentioned perhaps the trade in isn't such a bad offer afterall.

Some will give a reduction for a straight cash sale, but most of them don't give any reduction worth talking about. With a trade in you pay the full list price. It's all gone a bit nuts.

Thanks to all for the information very much appreciated.

Just for clarity when I bought the car in 2017 I paid €17000 and got 3,000 scrappage on my very old escort. So the retail price was 20,000.

Also the car advertising site "cars Ireland " value the car at over 16,000 which would make 14,000 seem reasonable. They're not buying it of course but that's what they say.

Having thought about it I am going to see how advertising it privately works out.

So now a 7 year old car is worth only 4k less than what it retailed for brand new ?Pat your living in dream land if you think you can get 14k for that car , don't waste your time trying to sell privately is my advice , your getting an amazing trade in price . good luck with it .

You got a good deal in 2017. I bought Jazz in Nov 2015 for c 23k, with traded in Yaris I think valued at 10k that time. Still very happy with car!

Yes the Honda are so reliable never a days trouble. The only odd thing about the Honda is that the passenger seat is not height adjustable despite the fact that they have spent so much time designing the magic seats in the back.

The passenger seat height is now an issue for us hence we're looking at the Toyota Yaris cross as it has height adjustment.

We got a good deal in 2017 because of the scrappage offer.

We have a 2022 Honda Jazz Hybrid & I agree about the lack of adjustment for the passenger seat, it is a pity. I don't know why they didn't offer it as an option.

We looked at the new Honda Jazz and it's a lovely car though not a whole lot different inside. The hybrid system seems very competent. It is a pity there is no height adjustment for the passenger because they have considered the space so carefully in the rest of the car.

As you say I don't think it's even an option and I'm sure many have brought it to their attention.
