Fat Dog’s mosh pit was the best crowd control I’ve seen so far. He didn’t say a word and everyone just knelt down totally still then went ballistic. Can’t show the video. Will post it elsewhere.

I will die before admitting that Enter Shikari don't have the best mosh pit, but god damn that was close!

Absolutely incredible gig, one of my favourite ever

Fat Dog was a good night's entertainment it has to be said. They certainly make a lot more sense live than on record, their studio output leaving me fairly underwhelmed tbh. Most definitely a festival band and you'd wonder why none of ours booked them this summer. It's fun, it's a good time. Is there any longevity in it? God knows, but that's not important for the time being. If they'd been about in the 90s they'd have been a crusty band playing numerous stages around the Green Fields in Glastonbury. I'll pick up a ticket tomorrow for the Opium gig but it's the wrong venue for them as the pit will take up virtually all the space in front of the balcony.

Mount Palomar was a pleasant surprise. I'd take him over the likes of Bicep, Overmono, Barry Can't Swim and any number of dull electronica that gets foisted upon us every summer. His breakbeat stuff was much better than the four-to-the-floor material though. I'd be very happy to see both acts in a field next summer.

    Nice early finish too😁

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene

Much prefer the 4 on the floor stuff over the breakbeat for Mount Palomar but other than that I agree 100%. Hopefully Fat Dog pop up at ATN

Porridge Radio at a pretty full Whelans tonight. Played pretty much every track off their new album which is dam fine material and added about 4/5 songs from back catalogue. Impressed and enjoyed every bit of it but lacked rawness of their last show in 2021 and felt a bit short

Looks like a ticket for Fat Dog is a necessary purchase in the am.

    5, 4, 3, 2, 1….

82 year olds in Rhyl on Wednesday - Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness - they were the Manfreds

Last night in Cardiff, promoting their new Album, UB45…

Alas a bit too much red wine for some who found themserelves thrown out due to their drunken behaviour

Only getting around to posting about this now. Therapy? were as reliable as ever pumping out one banging tune after another. They played the whole Troublegum album but not in order, and fired another few earlier tunes in too for good measure. It took about three songs for the crowd to start bouncing, but when they did, they really did! Excellent gig.

Complete change of pace for Sunday night. PSB had the crowd in the palm of their hands. I first saw them back in 2013 when there was only two of them onstage. At one point on Sunday, there were eight! Absolutely amazing. The stage backdrop, the performance, the atmosphere. Unreal. The crowd were completely silent at one stage when there was just one muted trumpet being played. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

Gigs '24 - Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Gomez), The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Pixies, Ride, Therapy?, Public Service Broadcasting, IDLES, And So I Watch You From Afar

Gigs '25 - Spiritualized, Orbital, Supergrass, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Vantastival

Public Service Broadcasting in Cork last week was fantastic. They are amazing players in their own right but with the visuals, vocal samples and the live female vocalist it was outstanding. The drummer is a beast. All of them syncing to those projections in time was amazing to see. 10/10.

Giant Sand is now Howe, the support act playing bass and his kid on backing vocals.

A worried start but ended up being a really fun gig.

Bello is a gem of a spot and the sound is always spot on.

If it had been a few of you might be taking enforced holidays from Boards…..

Anyway, currently downloading a few pics from this evening's adventure in Wales

In case anyone didn't catch this earlier a lovely episode of Record On about the Specials on Sky Arts

Been on before and will no doubt be on again .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,162 ✭✭✭Stillill42

Agreed on the really fun gig bit but the sound? What was the story with the snare drum buzzing the whole way through?? Surely that's an easy fix? Anyway, lovely if chaotic night. The lads played like they'd met 10 minutes before the gig but in a totally charming way. Great stuff, a ton of genres going on, lovely watching Howe's daughter watching him, lovely intimate gig, albeit a bit weird, closed altogether until 15 minutes before the support supposed to start. Anyway, had a great night.

yes it was a squeeze in Swansea…

+1 to that. Heavy on the new album but all the better for it. Vocal added extra dimention- couldnt get Bett Gibbons outa my head when I heard her- delicate but enthralling. Great night and super to see it sold out.

Folk Drone. Who ever thought there would be such a genre but they were at a new venue for me, Lost Lane.

You know when a folk band start the first bar of their song and then repeat that same bar for a very long time. You could hear each of the 6 instruments perfectly. Fair dues to the engineer.

The harpist support was unique, never seen anyone play a harp like that before.

I've heard that they didn't have the brass section in Cork? They were brilliant in Belfast and added a lot to the spectacle.

Special night in St Anne's Church in Ballyshannon last night with Muireann Bradley ⛪

Wonderful setting, sound and performance. Towards the end Muireann was presented with one of the Rory Gallagher guitars, bought at auction and now residing in Ballyshannon, to play 🎸 Bigger things destined for 2025.

Also great to get a taster of another up and coming Donegal talent Chanel McGuinness. Look out for her forthcoming album 💿

60s pop in Rhyl on Wednesday, 80s reggae in Cardiff on Thursday, 80s new wave in Swansea on Friday. Support from 90s Soul II Soul and Reef and Young Culture Band reggae from the 21st century. This was the Eras Tour culminating with 70s metal in Manchester last night….

Why would you do a gig on Sunday afternoon? So you can take your son to his first gig - aged 3. 😎

    Great start

Couldn't make this in the end as i woke up Saturday morning with a dose that got progessively worse through the day. By 6.30 i was floored. Only approaching some semblance of good health now. Hope you enjoyed it anyway!

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene

I was originally going to see IDLES twice this weekend but I can't justify both shows now. They're playing the same set so it's not like I'll be missing anything.

It was different, I’ll give it that. It was also busy. Where do people develop a taste for folk drone and are there many bands meeting their needs?

Ezra Collective good fun in the Olympia tonight. Maverick Sabre guest vocalist. Got all the audience (3 levels) dancing for most of the gig. Seen them outside at ATN and now in the Olympia - think they would be great in a festival tent.

Full house for Ezra - I think they had as much sweaty fun as we had. Circle seat €27 , best value gig this year.

Hugh Cornwell, Whelan's, last Saturday - magic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,831 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last night were absolutely phenomenal. I've rarely been so engrossed by an act. It was utterly hypnotic and so wonderful. Two and a half hours of pure enjoyment and Cave had the crowd in the palm of his hand for every minute.

Love that there's more people with no phones in their hands, than with phones in their hands

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,831 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

The odd person who had a phone in the front couple of rows, he slapped their phones away.

Saw a clip of him from a recent show and he gave the crowd 30 seconds to take photos and then they were to "put their fückíng phones away".

It was great on Tuesday, I did take a handful of pictures but my phone was away for the pretty much all of it and it seemed to be the case for a huge chunk of the crowd - the show was like a sermon - that said, there's always a few record everything heads. It was great.

Listened to Fire in Cairo for the last couple of days, not bad. Got to Whelan’s upstairs and they’re a Cure tribute band. A good one. So good one of the original members of the Cure was in the audience and played a song with them. I didn’t recognise it.

Forty years ago i moved to London. I’d pre booked a ticket to see The Cure in Wembley arena a couple of days after I landed. My ticket was for the last row at the back.
Tonight I was this close. 😎

Thought the musicians were very good, lead singer has the looks and moves but his voice was very dodgy at times, the songs where he actuallyhad to sing were poor. The song Hartley played on was Play for Today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 284 ✭✭T.V Eye

    Hooky was a good time.

    JD set the standout.

He doesn't play the bass much, and a lot of the NO stuff is not live, but it's a better celebration of the music than seeing the band called New Order.

I just wish he'd tell more stories.

A complete legend and a massive amount of fun. cheeky bit of Monaco for the Shells fans too.

    It’s a bit OT but anyways…..

I now have two Ticketmaster apps on my phone. Which one do I get rid of?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,988 ✭✭✭Polar101

One of them is probably called Ticketmaster IE, that's the obsolete one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭Mucker46

If it is due to recent upgrade check if you can see your events. Don't think you can see them anymore on the old one

Peter Hook & The Light were brilliant last night. Joy Division stuff was definitely the stand out. A cracking gig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,794 ✭✭✭dasdog

I saw him in The Academy about seven years ago and it was €25 in for three hours of New Order and Joy Division - almost punk rock at times. Saw New Order in Trinity a couple of years later and they were boring in comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Hooky was great last night. Was a little disappointed at how little of the music was being played live on the New Order side. The Joy Division stuff was great though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 284 ✭✭T.V Eye

I had to laugh during the end of Blue Monday when the band put down their instruments, walked around and took a drink. I think a deliberate nod to the crowd. Honestly though, a lot of the New Order stuff kinda has to be done like that.

Enjoyable night, apart from about 30 minutes when a loud bunch of 4 or 5 dicks came in and thought it was a great idea to shout their conversation louder than the music. Thankfully they eventually f'ed away. Agree they the singers voice was hit and miss, better on the lower range.

Delighted to get to hear some of those songs live though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭Mucker46

Those dicks were so annoying. Agree great to hear some of the songs and lower range definitely better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,848 ✭✭✭Gloomtastic!

10/10 for Dead Flesh in Fibbers. It dipped for about 30 seconds at one stage but the rest of their set was so good, they are forgiven.

Incredible mosh too. Will post later…..

Ibibio Sound Machine at Whelan's tonight were 75 minutes of great afro jazz funk non stop dancing! The stage could barely fit the 8 of them but they are a very good band and the audience was into it for every minute of it.

I got the feeling that the band arrived late in Dublin and this messed up the schedule for the evening. The doors opened at around 8:20 pm and the support act was scrapped completely. Ibibio came on stage at 9:20 and played until 10:35.

Great evening though and I hope they can get more famous and play bigger venues.

Califone were pretty good in the Grand Social tonight. Conjured up a vibe of desert and swamp at times, some Americana, a pinch of Disco, a dash of West Coast rock. A mellow feel to the evening but not necessarily mellow.

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene
