They did 1h 45 of there own material, that's not bag going these days and then another 40min of hanging around as they said the show was over they were just out there for fun and finished on one of there own songs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭gandalfio

The set of covers was absolutely horrendous. It totally killed the gig. Up until that point the gig was going so well. Some of the jams and variations of their tracks was mesmerising.

Why on earth they felt the need to start asking the crowd to shout up songs for them to cover, and to keep it going for 30 to 40 mins, is beyond me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,213 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Looked at set list.. and no 'Step'? 😦

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭Mucker46

no mansford roof, cape cod, Walcott. These instead of covers would have been better. Own stuff was great and loved the set. Loved the ska version of ottoman

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,023 ✭✭✭✭hynesie08

I understood what they were trying to do, the show was the show and this was like a post credits Easter egg, but it just dragged with Ezra pretending to read requests off phones, should have just covered 3 or 4 songs they liked.

Been Stellar at the Workmans tonight. A young, enthusiastic crowd in for this one. Can't say i shared their enthusiasm. I wasn't convinced by their recorded output but figured live might be different, plus a couple of up and coming acts to boot, so why not? They were fine but just a bit middle of the road for me really. Too much 00s/Strokes and not enough SY/MBV. They weren't crap or anything i just wasn't convinced by any of it. Second half of their set was better than the first though. I'd probably give them another go at a festival but not on their own.

Cardinals were the second act of the evening and i can't figure out if i liked them or not. Saw a bit of them at ATN this year but it wasn't happening for me and when it started raining i ditched them for the tent next door where Hot Girl were playing. Tonight two songs in and i thought 'absolutely not!' as they came across like a beefed-up Frank & Walters or Lightning Seeds, far too indie-disco for my ears. The next few songs had elements that i liked (great to hear an Irish act make use of a phaser and wah, not heard enough on these shores) but at the same time they kinda reminded me of (gasp) Glasvegas. That is not a compliment. Yet there was something holding my interest. Not getting the Pogues reference at all, although there is an element to their music that i imagine could see young emigrants in the bars of America and Oz losing their **** to them. Whether i like them or not it seems clear to me that this is a band destined for bigger & better things. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised to see them filling the Olympia a year from now.

Wifeswap were first up. Do we need another post-punk band? Not at all, done to death, but they made a decent enough racket. Was going to give out about them all sporting bumfluff moustaches then remembered it was still Movember so i gave them the benefit of the doubt. Pity the guitarist though, he looked like an escapee from U2 circa 83/84; Shocking mullet, terrible 'tache and sleeves rolled up on his not-quite-paisley shirt. If anyone knows him have a word. It's for his own good. The band are worth a look though, i'll be following their progress.

Not a bad night overall, just a feeling with all three acts of 'almost but not quite'.

The Lightning Seeds were just brilliant tonight. They were really enjoying it and the crowd was great. Ian Broudie has written some timeless pop songs, Pure , The Life of Riley, Lucky You, Sense, Change, Sugar Coated Iceberg ... ... And he can sing and play at 66. Wasn't expecting it to be so good to be honest. They didn't play Three Lions, which was a pity. The Academy is a great venue. Very convenient and ridiculously good value tickets. Beat that Liam and Noel.

I don't think they would have gotten much of a sing-along to Three Lions. Probably best that they left it off the setlist. It is generally their closing song, so they must have made the choice that it may not be appropriate.

I caught the Saw Doctors last night - first time in over 30 years seeing them again. They really put on a great show. Played for 2 and a quarter hours. The Olympia is a great spot for a gig.

Me first and the gimme gimmes is embarrassingly empty, this is why we can't have nice things.

It filled up OK in the end. Great gig, and my last proper one of 2024, so here's my top 5 from the stuff I've seen:

    (1) Doja Cat (at Longitude)

⇒ it was just an amazing day out with the family overall and my kids absolutely loved the festival.

    (2) Olivia Rodrigo (The Point, first night)

⇒ The only stop from the tour where she played both: can't catch me now AND so american!

    (3) Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (Academy)

⇒ personal hightlights: Feliz Navidad and of course Over the Rainbow!

    (4) Anthrax, Testament and Kreator (The Point)

⇒ personal highlights: running into Anthrax by accident the evening before at Matt the Thresher and taking selfies with them, also Testament playing Return to Serenity live. Both unforgettable events. Thanks lads!

    (5) Rammstein (RDS)

⇒ always a great show, but the size of the "Feuerzone" was a downer. I had hoped for some Gold Circle atmosphere, but it was in reality at least half of the pitch. Waaaaaaay too big for the massive price difference.

Culture Club last night at 3Arena were pretty good.

As advertised, they played the first 2 albums in full, so this one is really for the hard-core fans, many songs that haven't been played live in 35-40 years. Bigger production than the last time they were here: lots of visuals, great 2-tier stage design, lots of musicians-a total of 13 people in stage. So the steep price is slightly justified.

Tony Hadley was one of the two opening acts and he was also quite good. A 40 minute set, 8 of Spandau Ballet's great singles. I missed Heaven 17, only arrived after they have already finished.

I follow threads on here and on a few other sites and didn't even know they were playing. I'd say they're fun live?

Cantanac Dagar in the Crowbar Terrace which is upstairs in the Button Factory. My first time in that room, not a bad space. The band was a French experimental duo who apparently play 'Industrial Folk'. Bit of a misnomer that but anyway the two chaps set up in the middle of the room, one on banjo played through various pedals and the other guy beatboxing/vocals/harmonica/bells with a bunch of knob twiddling going on. Oh yeah, at one point the singer was screaming into a jumper he held over his face, much to the amusement of the audience. Support came from A'Bear, one woman twiddling knobs, creating some nice drones and textures with beats moving in and out of the whole thing. Pretty good.

This is a fair representation of last night.

Yeah, I saw it through a Facebook pop up ad, MCD did post on twitter but that's a hellsite so I just didn't see it.

Very very fun gig though, could have played more from the Diva album though, and I'll die on the hill they're version of save the best for last is the superior version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 741 ✭✭✭mgkelly

That's just downright weird! I like, tho'.

Crowd at that festival look a touch on the crusty side!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭md23040

Seen McCartney last night in La Defense sold out gig with 41000. Much cheaper than Manchester with no dynamic pricing. He lifted the roof off the arena, played for 2 hours 45 minutes with great voice and stamina for 82 year old. Amazing performance.

Having in for Last Apollo tonight, my final gig of the year. Looking forward to it, though I've seen next to nothing about it, fear the crowd might be a little sparse. Fingers crossed the atmosphere is good though

There were a lot of Irish there, utterly brilliant as usual, ridiculous that he can leave yesterday, long and winding road and maybe I'm amazed off the setlist and still be that strong.

The French sing La instead of Na for Hey Jude though, so I hope their bread turns mouldy and their cheese doesn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 741 ✭✭✭mgkelly

Sounds wonderful. Well done for going. Fear I may never see him - have toyed with trying to catch him on tour. Sounds real good experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,848 ✭✭✭Gloomtastic!

Industrial folk sounds like the manic version of Drone folk. The French seem to be the leading proponents of these genre, wonder why? You do know how to pick them DW. Great report as per usual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,975 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Well Last Apollo were spellbinding wonderful 🙂

12 musicians on stage*. Six violins, two cellos (violas? I'm not an expert!), guitarist, bass, drums, piano. The sound mix was perfect, the crowd were utterly wonderful, the whole thing was simply majestic

If they tour again with the full set up I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Stayed on the right side of pretentious but was pretty "arty" I guess, but overall the songs just sounded beautiful

*I presume they earned buttons, but they all seemed very happy up there

Monsieur McCartney played Michelle on Wednesday, just as Barnier was getting the push as French Prime Minister….

The fireworks were not bad either

    Doing his Wings stuff:

Now the problem with Pollyfilla is if you live long enough the cracks do start to show….

But yes, it was a great performance. He had already done over a 45 minute VIP Soundcheck earlier (no I did not get into that). And he did it all again 24 hours later. Incredible for a man of his age. He had no breaks except for a couple of minutes before the encore.

It just occurred to me that I saw:

    The Lightning seeds

    And

Nick Cave and the bad seeds

    in the past month.

What a coincidence. Maybe I'll win the lottery next.

anyone at Tom Meighan in Galway or Portlaoise over the last couple of nights. Going in Waterford tonight and just wondering what to expect.

Fontaines Friday.. Picked up a last minute seating ticket. Fifth time seeing them. Have never been blown away by them live. That didn't really change my mind. Can count on one hand the amount of times I've sat at a gig so I guess that didn't help. It's a feeling of being detached from the band. Would've liked to have picked up a standing ticket for the second night, but got distracted by..

The Streets in The Bernard Shaw.. Probably the act that I've seen more than any other.. Some sort of weird Guinness promotional thingy.. 45 minute set starting at 4PM.. Felt weird being at a gig when it's still bright outside, but phenomenal as always.. Mike Skinner knows how to put on a show!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,848 ✭✭✭Gloomtastic!

We were seated for Fontaines so thought it would be an excellent spot to capture an epic-sized mosh pit in action. Last time at Iveagh Gardens the whole front of the stage was bedlam.
But, apart from a few localised outbursts, there was no mass mosh.
The best action was the guy who crowd-surfed from the back right up to the front with only one break. The roar he got from the crowd when the bouncers pulled him out - epic.
Sound was a million times better than Iveagh Gardens, loved it.
Managed to blag a couple of tickets to the after show party. Was talking absolute shite to Conor Deegan for a bit, such a nice guy. Lesson learned.

After the exuberance of Fontaines, back to the cosy surroundings of Whelan’s last night for a great Sunday night rocking from Adore.
They had a guest appearance from a harmonica player. They should bring him on full time. What a great sound.

I was going to head to that but couldn't muster the energy to make the drive up. Good band, saw them supporting someone last year. Did you catch the support, Theatre?

Adore and I Dreamed I Dream are in Toale's in Dundalk early January so i might try that one.

Mention of FDC, Grian and Carlos were upstairs watching Theatre / Adore. Agree on the harmonica player - best song off the night. The harmonica in the right hands is a powerful instrument.

A few mini mosh pits started around where we were (Standing) but "Bouncer Squads" quickly moved in to stop. The policy for the night must have been no mosh pits, they were also pulling people up on shoulders. Complete contrast to the full floor mosh pit at Gurriers last week and to a slightly lesser extent Adore last night.

    Off to Chameleons tonight.

Think it's 2/3 of the surviving members and a setlist heavy on Strange Times. Should be a good one.

Confidence Man tonight. Fourth time seeing them, I know I am too old but they are just good fun. Like quite a number of bands I've seen in the Olympia this year they have really upped their game re visuals and stage set. They were always energetic on stage but they now have honed their stage craft. Amble tomorrow night in the same venue will be a bit of a contrast, but looking forward to them.
