Grass frost already in Galway. Lovely starry night. Roads will be tricky alright.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

The fog in the north side of cork city earlier was very bad.

Even here it was poor compared to what it should have been, still nice to see nonetheless. It was a great day otherwise as seen below, so not too disappointed, -2 C max temperature and sunny. Today was similar but more high cloud and a bit colder, a few centimetres of snow are expected tomorrow so December is starting off well.

My stats for November are in now, not quite as good as I thought but still pretty great as far as November goes.

    Mean temperature: 3.3 C (+2.2 C)

Rain: 44.7 mm (62% - driest since 2010, the LTA is actually very slightly less than Dublin)

Sun: 69.7 hours (181% - sunniest since 2010 and 5th sunniest on record)

1am vast majority of the main stations(18) above zero. 5 stations at 0c, Malin is -1, just oak park is colder at -2.

Oak Park and Gurteen reporting 0c and freezing rain at 0500, however, I assume that may be an assumption as they as they are both AWS?

Raining here the last hour in South Tipp - place is like glass where the rain has frozen on the bits that didnt defrost the last few days. Driving is treacherous on the side roads

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

Yep watch out for ice this morning.

What is it about freezing fog that can maintain ground temperature above zero? Air temperature here was between -2 and -3 all night but ground never froze in most places.

I've seen this other winters too. Is the fog preventing the ground heat from escaping as it would on a clear night?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

At 8 am, only 2 stations nationally were below zero..... Belmullet and Malin Head, both at -1!

Pretty sure I've never seen that before!

Was the rain here in the Southeast forecast yesterday, its a wet morning here

    I don't recall it was

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,215 ✭✭✭Kutebride

Compared to yesterday's sunrise and lying frost, it's dull with heavy fog this morning. Definitely need a few Xmas lights to lift the spirits. Cars with no lights; eek; spotted on my walk.

    -1 Meath.

Had a fair bit of rain last night here in Kerry, just below freezing still here out by the coast under dense fog, clearer in around Tralee and less frost at about 1.5 to 2C.

this weekend nowhere nearly as cold by night as what was predicted a few days ago in the models, no frost last night, temperature stayed above freezing all night and now a damp morning.

Lovely day in my area of meath, cold, clear sky and sunny, big change from yesterday

Heavy grass frost at around 11pm last night but thankfully roads were ok this morning. Lovely walking weather over the past 2 weeks.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

As forecast fog lifted at midday and bright blue skies now.

Stayed in bed until lunchtime as I'm not feeling great, so no idea what it was like this morning, apart from cold. Nearest station Casement was reporting 1C and fog, 3C now. It's dull and damp and feels colder than yesterday, but maybe that's just me. Surprised to hear on the radio that the Sally Gap is closed, didn't think it would be that bad this morning.

I love a cold snap, love the snow, but content with dry and crisp. Dreading the retun of rain and wind during the week.

Low cloud/foggy conditions in Galway City since last night, temp hovering around 1 degree since, 1.2 degrees atm

    edit : reply to hippodrome

This morning around phoenix park it was very still, damp cold air with the clearing fog but it cleared to lovely winter sunshine for a bit before clouds came in. A lovely day for winter lovers, you can’t beat how fresh the air feels on a day like today IMO

Hope you feel better soon :)

Disgusting rotten day now in Dublin. It feels cold enough for snow to be falling but of course no, we get cold rain. Soaked from a recent walk.

Lovely day here in Tralee. Got out for a long walk in the early afternoon, it was so still you cold hear a twig snap in the distance, just gorgeous.😍

Like a poster a few posts back, I'm also dreading the return of wind and rain. Plus my winter pet hate of temps in double digits.😩

Rain now in meath after a fabulous day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,025 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

If anyone needs reminding that uppers are important it's so evident today!! Temps well down 2 -5 yet not a hint of snow or even sleet.

The gradual return to normal temperatures not far away but in the meantime tomorrow will feel particularly raw in a strong Northerly wind

Raining here the past few hours

Rain that wasn't forecast yesterday to be around all day

There's nothing more annoying in weather terms than forecasts changing when forecasters look out the window

    Air temp currently 4.7c

    3.2mm since midnight

    10.8mm past 24 hrs

    Not pleasant

Sharp frost overnight. 2 climate stations recorded -5. Some wintry showers

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,980 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

another damp morning here in Meath, no frost here since Friday. Hopefully when we get the next cold spell it will be a bit more eventful compared to this one. Best thing about the current spell is the 1 week break we got from the Atlantic, so I got more walking in than usual given the time of year. The garden has also recovered from it's very soggy state up to 2 weeks ago.

So tonight will probably be the last frost for a while. I have enjoyed my walks through the forests in this weather. If it must be unsettled, I hope we get a proper storm at some point. The vortex might be too disorganised for that, though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Hard frost in Galway this morning. Beautiful morning since the sun came up. Blue skies and crisp. Perfect winter weather. We have had very little rain over the past 2 weeks. I can see it in the river/lake levels.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,904 ✭✭✭pureza

Still very windy and cloudy in South wicklow

    Rains stopped though

With a temp of 3.8c,that wind chill is brutal

Wicklow mountains are snow covered so I'd imagine drifts up there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,693 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Low temperature and ice 🧊 warning ⚠️ for the west and Midlands tonight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,089 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

I just read that this is going to become an El Nino Modoki winter. I think the winter of 2009 featured one too
