Rained for an hour or so this evening. Will be icy later.

Went for a walk just now. Roads are lethal in Galway on back roads. Beautiful starry night.

I will really miss this calm dry cold spell.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

There's still plenty of chances for this type of weather , where only 4 days into meteorological winter ,hang in there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,264 ✭✭✭OldRio

I was out at 7am for a run. Stunning sky with the different constellations shining brightly above. Diamond like frost sparkling on the road. Fresh and crisp.

What a way to start the day.

Lovely frosty sunny morning in Galway. I brought the dog down to Lough Corrib for sunrise and it was glorious. The water levels have returned to near summer levels due to 2-3 dry weeks.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Another damp morning here after a night of wind and drizzle, no frost here since Friday, bit of an underwhelming cold spell this has been however I really appreciated the dryer days for walking and getting the chance to dry the lawn out somewhat.

Out of curiousity, are you running on the road or on a track? I'd say the roads were iffy this morning. I wanted to go for a run last night but it was lethal.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

A chilly -4 at Markree Castle at 10am

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,264 ✭✭✭OldRio

On the back roads in rural Leitrim. I'm 65 therefore for 'run' you could easily substitute 'jog'.

The roads are bone dry at the moment around these parts. I have one of those lights that attach to the head. This obviously helps.

Frost lingering, grass still white. All change tomorrow.

Latest ECM seasonal is out. Shows a significant Greenland blocking signal for January-March 2024 and a very very strong -NAO signal for February. The month by month breakdowns as well as the rest of the C3S suite of models come out on the 10th-12th.

    Interesting but just for fun.

Back to normal here in Meath, feels fairly mild in the sun, a great dry sunny day to be out and about, making the most of it before the muck sweeps in overnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,883 ✭✭✭giveitholly

High of 5.7c here today and the frost has remained in the shade. Some of the back roads have remained icy all day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,978 ✭✭✭Dazler97

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,908 ✭✭✭CrowdedHouse

The coldest day of the cold spell for us.

it was very close to an ice day , frost has stayed all day in spots away from the sunlight. The soil temperature will have gone down a bit during this cold spell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,238 ✭✭✭Oneiric 3

    Ditto in Galway.

To be honest, I'll be glad to see the back of this cold spell, more so because I'm sick to death of that constant low winter sunshine. Everywhere I go its glaring and screaming into my face. Really extraordinary how sunny November and so far, this December has been. Haven't we had enough of that all summer? Give me gloom and storm over this any day!

Welcome back paddy1:) I have to say I could not disagree more, but each to his own. The milder air is already making its present felt here now

Unusual that you are feeling the milder air already up there. Has been below freezing here for over 2 hours now, which is actually the earliest the frost has set in since the start of this spell.

Low winter sunshine 🌞 well its winter so its expected, I was happy that we had a settled spell for once, summer was shite 8 weekends in a row of rain 🌧 ye I don't miss that at all , the next few days are gonna be horrible with spot flooding and windy if not gusty at times so if its that your after your gonna be happy

Temperatures lifting slowly across the country

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

    Currently -3 .

    Tonight

The rain may briefly fall as sleet but any wintry falls will be short-lived, with frost and ice clearing by morning.

Feels a lot milder in north Dublin tonight the rain probably causing that.

Visible ice on the footpaths here in cork suburbs, starting to rain now though @ 2 degrees

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,344 ✭✭✭red_bairn

It felt milder in Naas earlier (~18:30) than previous evenings when I went out to the shop. The car showed 5c..

Fair play to you. I have 2 Petzl head torches too and they are mighty. My steps over the past 2 weeks have been impressive. Exceeding 20k most days but I need to get back to the running.

Frosty again in Galway. Some of it never melted. Roads are only ok.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Well that cold spell was pure rubbish here in meath. Little frost often cloudy , rain showers at times making it damp . Next please

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,075 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

It barely qualified as a cold spell, just typical cold winter weather and mostly damp and above freezing the majority of the time. For us in Meath that is 3 cold spells in a row we've had since 2018 that have not really delivered in terms of snow or any precipitation for that matter. The next cold spell can only be better than the recent one which for us died a death by Friday and didn't even get the weekend out of it. Apart from some patchy frost we only got one decent nights frost out of the entire spell which persisted in the shade throughout last Thursday with Thursday being the only properly cold day of the entire spell.

Back to the current situation and the mild is back and things look reasonably mild for the most part over the next 2 to 3 weeks. A very wet week to come and a dryer trend from mid week next week. We may get some high pressure and if it positions itself right, inversion could cause things to become very chilly for a few days despite relatively high upper air temperatures. There is definitely a signal for things to change from December 20th with anything possible after that, a small chance it could turn alot colder in the final days before Christmas but we're going to need luck to get what we want.

Back to heavy rain and mildish colding muck in cork City :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 571 ✭✭✭gugsy

Wet, windy and miserable here in Galway City.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,075 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

a miserable day in Meath, feels colder than yesterday with that raw wind chill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,016 ✭✭✭adocholiday

Weather radar not looking as bad as Met Eireann's rainfall forecast for the S and SE. Still a rotten, miserable evening mind, but clearance from the West looks to be coming in a bit quicker and the overall intensity is lower. Leitrim and the border area around Cavan/Monaghan is getting the brunt of it now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,819 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

Absolutely manky out in Dublin, so windy.

Wouldn't be surprised if that coldish spell we just had is the only bit of remotely winter like weather we'll have, that's what happened last year although it was colder then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,289 ✭✭✭pureza

12mm so far all the same in Arklow

    Current rain rate 10.4mm/hr

    Basically lashing

We had freezing weather in January too. I have a screenshot of -5C at Casement at 7am on 17th January. Not sure how long it lasted though. Definitely not a great winter, but the December spell had compacted frozen ice and freezing fog for a week. Much better than last week certainly. I'll be devastated if that's the best cold spell we get!

It lasted a few days from the 16th-20th then became a bit milder but was mostly dry leading into the driest February since 1993 for the country. It was a beautiful few days, the southwest of the country had significant snow on the 17th. My head wasn't in the right place at that time so I didn't enjoy it but it was fine. It was from the northwest so doesn't stand out as a notable period especially for those in the east. Wasn't bad though.

Thanks @sryanbruen. You're a phenomenon! I usually screenshot any interesting local weather stats, but I'm not good at remembering the details.

Have you link for DL Harbour? Lost the link I had as they changed the url.

Gusting 42 knots at the moment in Greystones. Horrible evening with driving rain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭esposito

Absolutely rotten evening out there. Much worse than I thought in Dublin.

Ill take this crap weather for the next two weeks if it means we’ll have drier, much colder weather after Christmas

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,016 ✭✭✭adocholiday

Yeah I spoke too soon it has been an absolute misery of an evening in Wicklow. Horrible driving rain since around dusk. The two Arklow reporting stations seem to be offline so can't see any stats for the rain today.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 25,395 Mod ✭✭✭✭Loughc

Agreed. Looks like we’re in for the new traditional windy wet and mild winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,289 ✭✭✭pureza

I run the Arklow SW one, there's a PC problem

The weatherlink live is catching the rain data for me though

    17mm so far
