Extension lead disintegrate on touch

This happened yesterday. Issue with the aerial so I was plugging everything out. Touched the extension lead and it broke.

There's not a huge load on it by any means. Sky box, Saorview box, Apple TV, booster and a signal converter. Sky and Saorview turned off 99% of the time as the TV has both.

Any thoughts what could have caused this?

(I've removed the booster so we're down to the Sky box, Saorview box, Apple TV and a signal converter. Just don't want it to happen again)

It looks like it's had a rough life and some knocks along the way! Sure look at the elastic band keeping the plug together... That hardly happened as a result of you supposedly touching it! It's possible that a lot of exposure to heat (e.g. a radiator) or sunlight caused the plastic to go brittle and then it cracked more easily when it got a knock or two, but...

Anyway, just throw it away and buy a new one. It's a death trap...

Wow, that's interesting alright. So the power block and the plug crumbled? Mind turning it over and tell us if there is a brand on it?

Do you have an air ioniser nearby or a UV source, or was it in strong sunlight during use?

Sorry, the band is only on it as the plug broke too, we're not that crazy! It was in a dark spot and not moved.

No brand but it is CE marked.

No UV, it was in a corner behind the TV

I'm no expert on plastics and the type of plastic here will determine the causes of failure:

    Heat

    Age

    Oxidation.

To be honest it looks like a cheap power strip so the plastics are not likely high quality. Over the years the plastics have outgassed and become brittle as a result.

The other thing and to be honest it's a lot less likely is that you have a poor connection in your socket that's creating heat and ozone and that's attacked the plastic.
