Yes, but it is well known minorities makeup a disproportionate amount of those people in US prisons and a lot are said to be in there unfairly.

There’s also a lot more crime in America because it’s far more common to have large swaths of populations in certain places awash with poverty.

Drug use would be fairly high there as well compared to other countries.

Point being America has far more problems that lead to an excessive crime rate and by extension a high prison population.

Until those social and economic problems are rectified they’re basically pissing into the wind. But as above those in prison cannot commit their crimes in prison. It would be a fairly gargantuan task to remedy the aforementioned problems in a country as large as the US anytime soon so in the meantime there’s few other options.

While a prison term will not always correct someone’s behaviour neither does getting away with it or being coddled in fact. If there’s no punishment for crimes people will commit them. If there’s an expectation that you’ll get off easy there’s nothing to deter someone.

It’s called crime and punishment for a reason, I suppose.
