Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Buying used car

I'm buying a car from a dealer for the first time. Just wondering what the normal method of payment is? I've been told to pay by bank transfer (c 10k) quoting the vehichle reg. in advance of collection, is this standard practice?

Also, the warranty being offered seems to be through Mapfre? The cost isn't anything major but is it actually worth getting giving me anything beyond my normal consumer rights?

Bad as those 3rd party warranties are, they are still better than attempting to enforce consumer rights on a fly by night dealer.

There was a thread here recently where a car buyer refused to buy warranty and had a major failure. The consumer rights bit didn't go very well.

Paying by bank transfer is normal enough. Just the usual caveats, double check the account details and call them if you are unsure at all before you send it.

No personal experience of those warranties but anecdotally I’ve heard that there is no hassle with getting pay out from them as long as the car has been serviced and you’ve receipts for it.

What kind of car did you buy?

Bank transfer is definitely the preferred method of payment. Cheques can bounce, cash costs money to lodge as well as the security issue of having it on the premises at all.

    Mapfre warranty works well AFAIK.

Excellent, best of luck with it. I had an Ibiza with the same engine a few years ago. Cracking little motor. Well wear.
