    Hi all,

Would anyone know what is the legal working distance to be maintained from LV power lines entering a house?

example painting a house with a hoist.

    2m away or?

I had a search of the ESB stuff online but all relates to mostly overhead power lines MV usually.

    cheers.

LV lines are insulated and can be found running along fascia boards on many older houses so painters, gutters/chimney cleaners etc. work in close proximity to them. As with everything in life always use common sense.......sadly common sense in not that common 😉

Thanks for that, it’s actually 1m exclusion zone from LV over hanging lines.

All on the ESB code of practice for avoiding danger from overhead electricity lines.

Very useful diagrams in it, just if anyone else is interested.

  • They're not all insulated. The LV overhead wires used on the typical 4-stack poles from the mid 20th century, which are found all over Ireland, including in a lot of suburban areas, are definitely not insulated - you very occasionally see some spectacular sparks when one of them sags or is damaged and shorts out across the phases. They're just bare wires.

You may still find some much older overhead two wire drops to houses that terminate on a pair of ceramic / glass insulators. Those aren't insulated either. I think most of those are gone, but you could possibly still find one or two around feeding older houses.

You should have read the OP's query before replying - he specifically referred to LV power line entering a house...... they are insulated😉
