Reddit has become fairly woke and left wing over the last few years but nothing to the extent of Boards it's not even close.

Moderation on some reddits is completely insane. Just got a ban from a certain reddit. No warning, just ban from the reddit without recourse. When messaged back muted from messaging mods too, again without reply or reason, just automated msg, bang. Basically saying you're gone and you'll never be back, fvck off.

And that's on one of the football reddits for something completely mild, no trolling, no abuse, not going against any site or reddit rules, just not 100% in line with the mainstream on one of the dogma topics which touched football in this case.

Reddit and boards kind of compliment each other I think.

Reddit is great for hobbies and personal interests, and general light hearted topics. It reminds me of old Boards where each forum has a dedicated core group. The /Ireland and /CasualIreland are like AH in the bygone days. I presume the users are younger, maybe less jaded.

That said, Boards is better for issues where you need honest advice for personal, financial issues because you get that Irish perspective that Reddit just can't have.

Not necessarily. Not all discussions are about current affairs.

Ive had some years long discussions with people here about hobby related subjects. It's not debate, it's just discussing a hobby we all like.

Boards is far from a left leaning paradise these days..nothing compared to what it was like 5-10 years ago. Ther are a lot of things posted by people these days that would have gotten you banned back then.

Seems like there was a bit of a ruckus on Reddit Ireland last night, I missed it unfortunately but it is amusing to see the aftermath at least

    What happened?

I’m going to take a complete guess without knowing anything about what happened.

Load of slightly odd student union types became moderators. Mostly SF and People Before Profit, but even more exotic memberships exist. Place becomes filled with very generic Father Ted memes, rants about the country, and the type of stuff that only a spotty 19 year old student cares about.

Some pushback from contributors. A split, lots of bans, complete overthinking about the importance of a message board, long posts announcing resignation, a good old fashioned pile-on etc.

Not sure what happened not familiar with the ins and outs there. Only thing I saw was some mod doing a poll whether they should continue or not. I assume they may be well known if you're a long timer there. Who knows.

r/Ireland isnt even the worst by a long shot signed out of r/Europe and r/de ages ago. Atmosphere and modding is real hardcore there. Like shoot on sight no questions asked ever. Unless you're yay lets all be lbtq+something non-white Ukraine Israel USA USA wear your mask day and night the rest of yis are all nazis.

No-one should be generalising about Reddit and its users: there are massive differences in culture between different subs, say /r/Ireland vs. /r/Atheism vs. /r/GuitarPedals vs. /r/AskMen etc. They might as well be on different sites for the little they have in common. Don't like a particular sub? Don't subscribe to it and you won't see it in your feed.

What was the ruckus referred to above? I have no idea.

I wonder did the loser who tried to kill Trump and a Reddit account?

Reddit is pointless for Ireland in that the Ireland posts are mainly trivial. The more specialist subs are better but tend to be full of information that relates to other countries mainly the US.

At least with Boards you get Irish replies on all subjects.

Tbf I get a good laugh on /r/worldnews whenever Ireland is mentioned, they really hate us.

Everyone protects narratives dogmatic to them. When you're inside of those you get away with nearly everything, when not you either keep stumm or you will be made so.

Boards has a bit of that too. Granted not quite as dramatic as r/europe but it still does.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Greyfox

In fairness to reddit you'll learn a lot more on there than twitter or boards, you just have to know what subs are the best

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,095 ✭✭✭coolbeans

In all fairness nearly everything is woke and left wing to you going by your posts. Your life must be a torture.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,430 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

in that case if its a specialist topic/genuine hobby its better just use google , there are several thread sites, reddit is just one?

Remember the photos from the r/Ireland meet-up there a good few years back? Tells you a lot about reddit.

Yeh I'm sure boards.ie members are just swanning around as Irelands best looking people.

Depends on what your looking for, if you want opinions from intelligent and knowledgeable people you can get it easily on reddit thanks to the excellent upvote system

Opened an account with reddit but Everytime I post something, I receive message a few hours later saying due to lack of posts, I haven't enough of a credit score

Chicken and egg situation there. You need to post stuff that everyone agrees with like Fr. Ted and Tayto memes to build up your credit rating.
