It could be worth a discussion thread for northern counties (Ulster and north Connacht), possibly also west coast, where a strong frontal band will arrive later this morning creating strong to damaging winds (westerly 80-120 km/hr) and associated heavy rainfalls. Exposed coastal locations could see gusts into 120s in km/hr. Combined with locally torrential rainfalls, driving could become hazardous in some places for a few hours around mid-day.

This front will gradually weaken as it moves south into central counties this afternoon and early evening, expect squally showers and winds of about 60-90 km/hr in the dying phases. Very mild in most regions today, highs 11 to 14 C.

A school bus in Glencolmcille Co Donegal was blown off the road this morning, the students apparently had to crawl out of the back.

Very stormy here in Sunderland over lunch time. Recorded a gust of 45kts, but this was in a spot with a bit of a funnel effect. Calmed down significantly in the last couple of hours.

The Heidrun oil platform off Norway is giving some interesting readings - 11hpa drop in around 4 hours and gust to 160kmh.

Norwegian met service are forecasting wind gusts of between 40 and 50 m/s in the northern parts of Nordland with the possibility of a Hurricane on the coast.

It would appear that the highest gust speed was 98 km/hr at malin head around 10:00. Peak gusts in western Scotland at low elevations were around 110, and up to 170 in higher locations as well as on oil platforms where the storm is still in full force. As expected the effects of the front further south are considerably less extreme. Peak gust at Dublin so far is only 65 km/hr (2 pm) similar to Valentia (67 at 1 pm). Temperatures generally dropped from near 11 C to near 7 C as the front passed. Rainfalls in north up to 10 mm, reduced to 1-2 mm further south.

Currently gusts to 162 km/hr at a coastal location in Norway (Veiholmen).
